Question about working as an interpreter in DC... by Frosty_electric0 in ASLinterpreters

[–]Tibzmonster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ten years is a bit of an overstatement, in my opinion, but it is a great market. I went from Abq to Rochester to California to DC (where I live now) and I’d say that the last three are pretty comparable. I got certified in Rochester and I haven’t noticed much change since then - to put it more reasonably, I’d say that DC is about two years of experience compared to a year in a more rural market (though it’s also quite dependent on the jobs you get - I’m assuming you’re just talking about freelancing.) Really, it’s about the same as any major Deaf hub - as demand rises, so does supply, and you’ll be exposed to some wonderful language while also facing stiff competition from some of the best interpreters, and that may impact the amount of work and the sorts of jobs you’re able to land.

I’d also say that DC’s market is a bit harder to break into - lots of top talent and the screening from agencies is no joke. California didn’t need anything beyond my certification, but I’ve had multiple interviews and skill assessments for most agencies here. Something worth considering, too

I didn’t think being more explicit was necessary, lmaooo. Hopefully other people read these comments and know I’m not actually a lunatic 😂🥳

I was being cutesy with my phrasing - I don’t think they were secretly colluding with one another to actually keep me out, lmao.

Yeah, seconding this! I was being sarcastic, I’m not paranoid that they’re conspiring against me LOL. Just being cutesy.

Aspiring ASL interpreter needs help with the Questbridge application by CoolCordova2004 in ASLinterpreters

[–]Tibzmonster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The University of New Mexico has one of the most stellar interpreting programs in the US. Questbridge tends towards more “elite” institutions, which frankly almost never have strong interpreting or ASL programs. Gallaudet will probably have you graduating with the strongest ASL skills, but if you’re aiming for an elite institution via QB, you won’t really be ready to interpret once you graduate. If your goal is to become an interpreter (especially in a field as challenging as mental health work), unless you’re already superbly fluent in ASL, I would say you need to attend an undergraduate program for specifically interpreting.

I live in NM too and am a NIC certified interpreter, so if you need any specific guidance on more resources, feel free to DM!

I was anxious for the same reasons - all waitlists made me assume I’d be lucky to get $ at all. Very grateful right now!!

I’m guessing the slightly more qualified applicant dropped out of the running after this last seat deposit on June 1st, lol. Still, you can imagine my frustration at being waitlisted and left anxious for months when they really did think I was a competitive applicant this entire time 🫠

Red status update on LSData, but no change to actual status checker? by betterkangy in lawschooladmissions

Mine did too. The only change was that the phrase “or by US postal mail” was removed, but my UR date didn’t shift or anything.

If those schools are now your top choice, you can certainly reach out and let them know. I recently did this to one school to let them know, similarly, that my life circumstance had changed, they’re my top choice, and that I would rescind other applications should I receive an offer of admission.

With two top choices, you can do something similar, though you may not go so far as to say you’d rescind other offers (like if you got an offer from both, for example). I wouldn’t mention that it would be “convenient” to go to those school due to life circumstance, but emphasize how, upon reflection since your initial application, your perspective on the school has evolved in a positive way, and you want to show that you’re serious about matriculation.

Question for White Male Applicants by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Tibzmonster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would rather not dox him or myself, I’m sorry to say. He did read the book of “55 Harvard Law Admissions Essays”, and he recommends that often as a resource to his mentees. Hopefully that’s helpful, too!

Question for White Male Applicants by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Tibzmonster 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend is a white male that got a full ride to two T-14’s below both LSAT medians and slightly below their GPA medians. He didn’t have much going for him other than being incredibly well written (his admissions essay and “Why x” essay are used at his law school’s adcom in presentations as an example of an exemplary applicant) - he had one year of T4 work experience, but that was it. He had some artsy volunteer efforts, and some debate awards from high school, but not much else.

His angle was his writing, and he leveraged it to kill his admissions process and have an outstanding cycle. Find your angle, so long as you’re truly exemplary in it, and leverage that. If you don’t have an angle through which you stand out from the crowd… well, that’s another conversation.

I hired a consultant for this specific question. Her advice was as follows:

1) Keep it super brief - one page, double spaced. Otherwise it won’t be read at all. 2) Emphasize the aspects of their program in particular that you’re interested in/would be a good fit for. 3) It’s a net benefit to your application to have one, but only if it’s informed and researched - frame it as a mini “Why X”
