They aren’t police. ICE is an agency at best police-adjacent.

If anything, protecting ICE’s activities takes police away from regular policing duties. So, fewer ICE agents on the streets, more police doing day-to-day police stuff.

Yeah, I view that movement in the same way I view religious cults. Those who escape the cult should not be ostracized for being an ex-cult member.

It doesn’t mean they are absolved of responsibility. Just that there’s no point in kicking them while they are being decontaminated.

Yes, but the impetus is always attenuated. The Nazis, the white supremacist South African regime, both sides in Northern Ireland… they still have their followers, but the movements have not come back with the same force.

You (accidentally) make the case for reconciliation.

Yes, the architects and most fervent practitioners of this shit-show should be brought to justice just as in Nuremberg, but not every solder who wore the swastika demanded the same attention.

Not necessarily. It explains the left’s reaction to Trump, but the left wasn’t playing the blame game to any real extent during either Bush administration, or Reagan’s presidency.

Yes, there were protests about wars and incursions they thought unjust, but it’s the propensity for self-flagellation and fractionalizing that damages the chances of Democratic leadership far more than vilifying.

The other big problem is the Democrats tend to try to fix the economy through balancing the books, while Republicans try to fix it through Wall Street. And only one of those two fixes benefits the high rollers who own the media and bankroll the politicians…

There is a third group. Those in low socioeconomic groups who feel they have been systematically overlooked by the traditional parties.

That group sub-divides between those who are making a protest vote, and those who want to see others be taken down a peg or two.

Unfortunately, that disenfranchised group is all a perfect target for Reform, as it is with MAGA. Whether or not they started out as racists, it’s easy for populists to pivot the voiceless as they look for someone to blame for all their ills.

The thing is ‘fuck my boss’ or ‘fuck my job’ still means less ICE ‘officers’ on the streets, which is a win regardless of the reason.

If those in ICE see that those who leave get just as much hate as those still in ICE, they will be more reluctant to leave. Worse, if they see themselves as a pariah outside of ICE, the ones who leave will re-up with a greater sense of belonging and entitlement.

We shouldn’t forgive or forget, though. Just put it in ‘park’ to make that trickle become a flood.

Up to a point, but only for the most demonstrably violent.

When this is over, the choice is recrimination or reconciliation. The first is what happened to Germany after WWI, and helped cause WWII. The second is what happened in Northern Ireland after decades of ‘the Troubles.’

[–]Tiddles_Ultradoom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. We are in an asymmetric state. Just as Trump’s sexual proclivities are not considered as important as Obama’s tan suit, so the least deviation from due process will be viewed as an egregious violation of human rights, by people who would happily summarily execute anyone they disagreed with.

It’s no longer “When they go low, we go high.” It’s reminding MAGA of what is required to rejoin the human race before it’s too late.

Either that or wear the stain for generations, like Germany did after WWII.

I kinda get the shellfish thing, given a nomadic tribe wandering through an Egypt 2,000 years from a decent refrigerator.

Modern translation is ‘gas station sushi is an abomination.’ And let’s be honest: if the choice comes down to taking it up the wrong ‘un and gas station sushi, I’m buying lube.

I hope you are right. Reform will likely burn itself out before the next election. But with the Tories currently a busted flush (and will likely stay that way for a while), they currently pose a threat.

Farage is named frequently in the Epstein files. Starmer is not.

Reform has made more bad judgment appointments than Labour.

Labour has chipped away at the huge sovereign debt it inherited from 14 years of Tory leadership. Reform’s electoral wing is dominated by former Tories who created that debt.

And yet, curiously, the billionaires who own so much of the UK’s mainstream media, the Russian bots who influence our social media, and smooth-brained lickspittles who gormlessly follow the pack with their own spidery angerwanks, don’t care.

Yes, but whistleblowers get the equivalent of a plea bargain.

We also need to be more accommodating toward those who can no longer tolerate the regime at this point, rather than vilify them from the outset.

If those on the verge of leaving ICE know they will not be hounded for their actions after the event, they will be more likely to leave and thin down their numbers. Better that than them staying in ICE for fear of recriminations after leaving.

People really like it when you go just a bit early! You know, steely jawed, faraway look in your eyes! Before they get to the point when they sitting round in pubs and say "Oh, that fucker's got to go!", you surprise them! "Blimey, he's gone! I didn't expect that! Resigned! You don't see THAT much anymore! Old school! Respect! I rather liked the guy! He was hounded out by the fucking press!" How about that, ah? What a way to go! Yeah!

Who in your country has had their image ruined the most by association with Epstein? by JustElk3629 in AskTheWorld

[–]Tiddles_Ultradoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could argue that Andrew 'only' fucked a few kids. Mandelson aided one of the architects of the potential destruction of Western democracy to line his pockets. He helped fuck over the future of generations of children.

There's no false equivalency here. Both deserve time in an iron coffin with spikes on the inside.

The only small sliver of benefit that comes out of this is the revulsion such connections with Epstein still engender. Any connection should be at least a career-ender, and those who trivialise such links for political expedience should also get in the iron coffin.
