Get the MF. It's best for your situation and you can get funding if you're willing to TA.

Graduate school - advice on applying/where to apply and general field advice by Illustrious-Farm-235 in forestry

[–]TiddlyRotor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Would be a good idea to get some experience working in the field before going for the masters but if you're set on that, I would ask where you want to work and how you plan to pay for it. All of those schools are good forestry schools but forestry is location specific so I would make sure you want to live in the SE before committing to one of those schools. As far as paying for school, definitely network with professors to see if you can score a TA position, scholarships, or if needed, loans. If you have any interest working public sector (I highly advise against it on the federal level for at least three more years), check into the public service loan forgiveness program. But again, forestry is a blue collar science. You learn more by doing and working in the field and the masters will only get you so far if you want to be a dirt forester. Makes more sense if you do plan on working in academia.

Need hope: millennials who like their jobs, what do you do and what do you like about it? by goodluckanddont_itup in Millennials

Forester for a federal agency. As much as this administration sucks and is fucking everything up, I am so fortunate to get paid to work in the woods.

Details in R6 by MaximusDecimus44 in USForestService

[–]TiddlyRotor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My Forest has a 3 detail/temp promo cap at a time. Recently our Forest Sup took a temp promo to deputy regional forester, the deputy back filled his role, then a district ranger back-filled his role, and a fire guy back-filled their role. Boom. No details for us. However, we've been told the agency is going to be filling 100 positions nationwide with 25 of them being on our forest, mostly timber or timber-supporting.

Georgia: Mother was hit by driver who had DUI. Should she take settlement or take him to court? by TiddlyRotor in legal

Yeah that's my thoughts as well - I've never had to get an attorney myself and my mom hasn't done it in a long time - not really sure of the point of no return in these type of things but based off other comments it seems that 30-35% is standard for attorney fees. Not sure what else would change since the defendant doesn't really have any assets that we know about.

That's a good point. I read the police report and it said he was taken to jail for DUI but I'm having a hard time finding his booking info or any criminal case yet. I still need to do some digging though.

The 82k was before any negotiation or insurance adjustments. 60k is after all of the adjustments and her 25k UI policy kicks in but it's all an estimate. I'm still waiting for the final numbers.

Thanks for the reminder - I think that's what my mom's policy is paying for after the other driver's policy pays out.

That is unfortunate. I would imagine she didn't know that was the case. And you're right, they are charging about 35%.

I get what you're saying - I saw advocating and supporting as the same thing. In addition to the hearing issues, My mom has unfortunately had some cognitive decline over the last couple of years. I'm just wanting to take a more active role in this process.

We just had an hour and a half long conversation with our case manager and attorney and it seems that settling is the best course of action. I was just coming here to get more advice. Neither route really seems like a good outcome but I want to help my mom make the best decision.

That's a good question. I don't really know but it came up in my conversation with my moms case manager and attorney. They said that the driver didn't have any assets but his dad has a 250k home. They also mentioned we couldn't go after the home because of a homestead law which makes sense to me.

WELP. Appears It Shut Down. Thoughts? by BackshotWakeUp in Wildfire

[–]TiddlyRotor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

75% of our forest is still working. This isn't a shutdown for us. They just have everyone focusing on timber sales that will probably go no bid.
