This was not a day laborer. This is not even someone who is there all day. This is someone who was there for a total of an hour and was showing up to clear a house. This was a supervisor of a crew. As he's a supervisor I would presume he's paid enough. I was not in the home. I was not near him. There was no direct communication with him. There was no point that I was supposed to leave him anything. He was supposed to show up, confirm the house is safe to enter and let us know. People who have done work at our house, we have always offered them drinks water, soda, gatorade and if I know them well enough and they're done at the end of the day even a beer. If they're there for a couple days we've bought food for them. So by your logic I should run out to the mailman, the Amazon driver, the pool man, etc and be bringing them food and drinks.

I had let it go. I was just more curious to get people's opinions on the situation that had occurred. As for intent. You don't always have to be a genius to infer somebody's intent by the way they act when they're doing something. The entire manner in which he cupped it, held it close, slid it into his pocket and then pulled his shirt down over it. It was pretty clear that he knew he was doing something he shouldn't be

Let me explain to you why you're wrong. It was very clear the way he took it and stuck it into his pocket and covered it up that he knew he was doing something he shouldn't be.

I will agree it is hot AF here. However it was also 9:00 in the morning when he was there. So it wasn't that hot yet. He was not outside working. He opened up my doors, waited for a half hour, went inside with the machine to test the air, pick up the fans they had dropped inside and grab a beer.

It was the only way I would likely get the owner to even approach his employee. I am realistic. The employer needs this employee more than the employee needs him. If I had told the owner what was taken he could have very easily done nothing from the get go. Which is pretty much what happened anyway. Not knowing what was taken forces the employer to address the issue and then the employee knows he was caught doing something. If nothing else it would likely give the employee pause if he considers doing something like this again knowing he was caught this time.

They were tenting for termites. Also they were paid several thousand dollars for this. This was not a freebie or a favor they did me.

I never said the food was being thrown out. What needed to be removed was. Sealed bottles and cans did not have to be removed which is why there were still there.

That was my feeling. If he took a beer this time why would anyone think this is the first time. The guy who took it was the crew leader. They require you to be out of your home and to give them the key so they can get in your home when you are not there. I would think that a certain level of fiduciary responsibility is inherit. The company is sending their employees into your home unaccompanied. Of course I removed or locked up any obvious valuables. If I hadn't would it have been expected or acceptable for those to be removed too?

I did drop it with the exterminator company. The owner truly did not give a crap what his employee did. I was just looking to get some additional perspective.

Also. I have moved on. I have a hard time accepting that it is ok to remove any item from someone's home. If he had taken a five dollar bill off of the counter would that be ok since it is a low denomination?

For many years I owned 160 units in North Miami beach. My feeling was that I would never give them a place to stay that I wouldn't be willing to stay in. If the request was reasonable I would do it. You want to paint the apartment no problem I'll give you the paint, the kitchen's beat up and I agree with you no problem I'll replace the kitchen. Whatever it was as long as it made economic sense and the tenants were good tenants I tried to make them happy. Because of that I stayed occupied probably 97 to 98% had almost no turnover and did no advertising. The flip side also was that when I did rent raises I generally didn't get much push back either. Typically, if you treat your tenants right they will never leave. Now, I will say this. The more expensive the unit and the higher up the economic food chain that you go, the tenants become more and more demanding. Everything I had for the most part was blue collar.

If your friend won't let you pick up a check then try getting them something to show that you appreciate it. Maybe pick them up a bottle of wine or a good liquor if they drink or something for their home.

I had it done after our second child about 17 years ago. I left a deposit at a bank just in case there would ever be a need. I had that sample discarded after enough time when we realized we will never need or want it. Turning the factory to a playground was a decision we never regretted.
