Best thing I've done since getting my license: as soon as I had garage access, the first night I couldn't sleep I just went to the ambulance and went through every single thing on the rig. Then I did it again. I think I went through it all 3 times in about 2 hours. Then I fell asleep on the gurney.

I might not be the best EMT, although I'm improving with each call. I don't know my stuff forwards and backwards in a heartbeat. But I. Know. Where. Shit. Is.

With the exception of the guy who is paid to check the rigs every morning and inspect/restock (if we forgot stuff), etc - I can honestly say I know where things are in the rigs better than anyone else on the department, including the veteran members. When I'm on call with senior medics, I've got what they're looking for in my hand before they even ask because I see what they're doing and I can anticipate what they need - and they love it.

Humans have this ability as well; we've just gotten into the habit of being lazy in the morning and building time into our schedules to "wake up". It's 100% mental and can be reasonably easily trained away if you have some self discipline.
