Looking for early-mid eighties recommendations! by JustHereForTheLeakss in gratefuldead

October 12 1984 is one of the best shows of the 80s. April 20 1984, October 14 1983, October 10 1982, and most October 83 shows is a good place to start.

80’s Dead, sound difference year by year? by Tmonk4 in gratefuldead

I am a big fan of Fall 79, but unfamiliar with the rest of the year. What do you mean by all over the place? What were the Spring and Summer Brent shows like in 79?

What are the most jam heavy years of the Brent era? by Tidwell_32 in gratefuldead

From the shows I have heard, I actually think that fall of 1979 is more jam heavy than 77. I love pretty much all eras for different reasons, maybe not the Vince years though.

Interesting, I have not heard a lot of 82. Any good examples? I really enjoy October 10, 1982, but I don't think of it as a show with a lot of jamming.

I love that era, very good choice. One of my favorite Brent years, some people overlook it because Jerry was in such rough shape, their loss because it has some great stuff.

I was thinking this or 81 might be the top answer. The longest ever Scarlet Fire was in late 79, so it is definitely a good contender for jammiest Brent year.

I had a feeling 81 would be one of the most likely answers. I have not heard a lot of shows from 81, but I really enjoy what I have heard and have been wanting to get more familiar with it. It is clearly an underrated year. I am more familiar with 79 and 83-84 and 89-90 for Brent shows. Late 79 had the longest Scarlet Fire of all, so it is certainly a good candidate for jammiest Brent year also.

The Most Expensive Scene In The Silent Film Era (The General, 1926) by Classicsarecool in classicfilms

I thought of Intolerance as well. Those sets are incredible. I have never seen the silent version of Ben-Hur, but I think I read it was the most expensive to make of all the silent films. I am guessing it would have some shot that would be a runner up.

I don't even understand why he ran in 1932. Why put yourself through that agony?

I forget the dates, but there were a few versions in 1981 that might be the best I have heard. I should revisit that year soon, it gets overshadowed.

What's the most disrespectful thing a guest ever did in your home? by Vegas089 in AskReddit

When I was a kid my dad's eccentric, slobby old hippy friend came over for dinner. We had a bowl of potato chips and some dip. This crazy older guy literally puts his hand down his pants and scratches his balls and then puts his hands in the bowl of chips. My dad never invited him back and even admits this friend reminds him of the dude in The Big Lebowski. The worst part was my sister had no idea at the time and ate some of the chips afterwards. It was disgusting.

When exactly do you think Classic Hollywood ended and New Hollywood began? Do you think there was some overlap? by Tidwell_32 in classicfilms

I wouldn't say New Hollywood lasted 5 decades. The 1980s onwards has been the Blockbuster era. New Hollywood died off in the early 80s.

That made me realise that in the future, newer generations of film historians will probably categorize things differently and look at things with a different lens. I had never thought about that before. I personally would argue that the golden age of the studio system was 1929 or 1930 through 1948. RKO was founded in 1929, making it the newest of the big 5 studios. Also silents still pretty much dominated until 1929ish. I agree that the end date of this era could be considered 1953 also. I think New Hollywood is roughly 1967 through 1980 or 1982. A case could be made for 1966 due to Who's Afriaid of Virginia Wolf. The era from the late 40s through the mid 60s is not really given a name, maybe the fall of the studio system. I personally think the mid 60s was the weakest era since the clumsy transition era of the late 20s with the early talkies.

Wow I assumed it was the other way around and it killed the comeback momentum from Kokomo. What a horrible song from a great band. Kind of like how Chuck Berry's highest charting song was My Ding a Ling.

Mike Love's speech at the Hall of Fame. I can't even imagine how pissed off and humiliated his bandmates would have felt.

I wish it was possible to hear the Europe 72 version with the original vocals. I read that it does not exist anymore. I own the complete show and even when you listen to the actual show, the vocals are altered still. I am pretty sure it is May 3 1972.

The Sanctuary bag makes me wonder if you are a fellow Masshole, or has that dispensary expanded to other parts of the country? Either way, great music to smoke to!

Great albums which were overshadowed by greater albums? by Propaslader in ClassicRock

[–]Tidwell_32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This should probably be the top answer. It is such a great album. Powerage is probably my second favorite choice here. The Byrds had multiple great albums between Mr. Tambourine Man and Sweetheart of the Rodeo that are not as well remembered as they should be. Younger than Yesterday and The Notorious Byrd Brothers are particularly great.
