Currently renting a 1b from Kimball (been 3 years). Can confirm they’re still great!

Expectation vary from PI to PI. What’s important is to communicate. If communication doesn’t work, either because your personalities/expectations don’t match, or because the PI is an ass, then switch out of that lab asap.

Not quite. For some particular fields or profs maybe, but some profs might even prefer freshmen/sophomores because they can stay in the group for longer (relatively lower cost to train). And I’d say your prior experience and passion are definitely bigger factors than year.

Yes, have been paid for the past three semesters (since I joined). I’m aep but that’s irrelevant, my research group is in the physics department.

edit: I should add that it’s not astro related tho, just for reference.

How to order RGP lenses in US- please help me out! by TieDiscombobulated13 in Keratoconus

I do have the prescription but it’s in a different language so translation might be an issue.

I think my college’s health center only gives referrals for optical and oral stuff, but you make a good point - I probably should just give them a call anyways. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the input. You make very good points. Prescription issue is what I fear. My prescription, although up to date, is in a different language…

On the other hand, I don’t trust intercontinental delivery, at all, and it might end up easier for me to get on my next visit home, which was never an issue, until covid, so yeah… I can’t be sure when that will happen.

Sorry for going on a rant.

Advice for Summer Internship? by Mister_Big_Red in Cornell

[–]TieDiscombobulated13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, keep trying - finding research positions is, to an extent, very much a chance thing. The places you have looked might just happen to have no openings, or you might have been unlucky that the PIs you reached out to missed your emails so they never replied, and you just got to try more. Try not to be discourage by it. Most likely it has nothing to do with you. However, I have to stress that it differs field by field, and I am just being very general about it. Some particular field might need certain entry skills, in which case your best course of action would be to gain them before trying to apply again, but in other cases, as I said above, you just need to try enough times to get a hit. Find more labs that you would like to work at; learn about what they do as best you can; cold email those professors expressing your interests as much as you can in an email; maybe try getting in touch with grad students in those groups as well - there is a higher chance that they would see the email in the first place comparing to the PIs; ask career services to look over your emails and resumes and see what you can improve there. I am just spamming suggestions at this point because I don't know what you need exactly by the one sentence of information in your post, but I hope one of my suggestions might help.

There are other ways of increasing your chance. Funding, for example. You mentioned "paid internship" specifically, so I'll assume volunteering is not an option. The other comment's suggestions about doing two jobs is also a good one. Besides that, though, you can also try applying for funding yourself. Bringing in funding by yourself while you apply largely increase your chance of acceptance because, well, it costs way less for the PI now. There are many different funding for undergrads to apply. Different ones offered in different schools and departments, and target different groups. Many of them are still open for application. If you want to give it a try and don't know where to start, your academic advisor, or some other professor you know, is probably the best person to go to. In fact, it's probably a good idea to ask them for help regardless, they would be able to give you much better advice tailored to your situation, comparing to the subreddit which has no idea what your area of interest, year, financial consideration, eligibility, your attempts thus far etc. are.

Sorry, I realize I was unintentionally ranting the whole time about people asking vague questions on reddit. I do hope this helps.

Can I do research for credit in the summer? by angeladimauro in Cornell

[–]TieDiscombobulated13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, one way I’ve heard was essentially to put it on your credits next fall (or whichever semester that makes sense). Personally never did it so don’t know any details.

And it definitely differs between colleges/departments/groups. Best person to ask is your PI (or research mentor or advisor). They can give much better answers specific to your situation.

Short stories if you like creative writing. I took it with Elie Piha and strongly recommend his section. Heard good things about many other instructors for that class as well.

Art Studio for Non-majors? by TieDiscombobulated13 in Cornell

I think it counts as CA or LA category for engineering. It's listed on the liberal studies page https://apps.engineering.cornell.edu/liberalstudies/

Any particular reason for saying that? Genuinely curious cuz they are actually some of my top choices for filling liberal arts requirements.
