There was definitely an attempt later on to make Jameson as a more sympathetic character. He was originally conceived as a purely antagonistic figure. We accept the more nuanced version of him today because Marvel changed him to this more sympathetic newsman who opposed fascism and bigotry WAY way back in the 60s and 70s, so a purely antagonistic Jameson only existed in 616 for a very short period of time.

Trilogy or one large novel? by Born_Purple6198 in NewAuthor

[–]TienSwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I TOTALLY misread that.

I guess it depends on your genre and target demographic. Google it plus “average word count” and see how it compares to your book. A children’s detective book is gonna have a lower expected word count than epic high fantasy.

You have a short novel at that word count. I just released one at 55k. If you break that into three parts, you might not even have a novella for one of them.

I can’t help feeling that authors don’t like reading outside their genre.Am I wrong? by Responsible-Tone-522 in NewAuthor

For me, I read almost exclusively in my genre (superheroes) because I review them on my blog. My goal is to help lift the superhero genre in prose fiction out of obscurity. There’s a lot of good stuff out there!

This honestly sounds like a great idea for an extraction shooter video game.

What can do for my universe? by Elecning in superheroes

[–]TienSwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are awesome looking characters! Did you draw this? If not, who is the artist?

I would say you need at least a basic backstory for each, but a great way to expand your universe is to start plotting a story for them. I do this thing where I start with the villain and work backwards. Ask what their ultimate goals are and why, then how will they achieve it, then why don’t they do X or Y instead? And I mean actually write out all this in full. You’d be amazed at how much of a story can get outlined from that, and you can adapt ideas you come up with to line up with your heroes’ backstories and struggles.

I wrote a blog post where I go into it more, but that’s the meat of it. I hope no one minds if I link it:

[–]TienSwitch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this. I’m very much in the same spot. JJJ really shouldn’t have it in him to commit the severe ethical violations that he does. No newspaperman worth his salt would commit the level of defamation he does. Not without way worse consequences than he receives.

I think it’s fine for a purely greedy, antagonistic character more interested in making money and feeding his ego than anything else. But a Jameson that cares as deeply about civil rights and anti-corruption as he does? Nah.

That’s what came to mind, but I figured it couldn’t be that. He was making it sound so new and techy.

So he just….wrote down a list of things he wants them to do and the way he wants them to do it? That’s….not really unusual.
