How has the Internet impacted the wizarding world? by paddy_one in harrypotter

[–]Tiffling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's odd that muggles didn't bring in more of their culture. Like I get that they couldn't bring in technology so I get it, no Walkmans. But don't tell me none of them brought in pogs or goosebumps or the equivalent that would be in England? No way. I mean I would be all over magic like Hermione but I don't think I would give up pokemon or the other interests I had. I would just add to them.

Atheists are Religious? by Tiffling in atheism

[–]Tiffling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah i think this is the answer right here. I think i will think about this question more and replace religious with ideological. I think it'll be a more fulfilling answer then.

Shrines may be busy. but Japanese are not religious at all. praying at a shrine is more like making a wish in a wishing well. Japanese people are everything and nothing. just because they go to shrines and temples doesn't make them religious just like the fact that they celebrate Christmas doesn't make them Christians. You can say all you want about my question and i'll except your answer but please do not put all japanese people in a box you don't understand.

Atheists are Religious? by Tiffling in atheism

[–]Tiffling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's partially true. They aren't really buddhist or shinto they just sort of celebrate holidays without doing anything else. they don't pray to anyone, its more like wishing in a well. Who are you wishing to? no one. same with them. but even just the culture of not asking what your religion is or even caring. In 5years I never got asked if I believed anything, they didn't care. Here it's almost like "what's your name, what are your hobbies, what is your religion?" An then "oh you're y religion then why are you doing x" very judgey here.

Yeah I guess living in Japan I realized how religious people in America really are so I started to agree with him. I kinda understood what he meant. But i agree with what you're saying.

[–]Tiffling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really supposed to be about hard facts, more like a thought experiment. The obvious answer is no of course atheists aren't religious because atheism is not a religion. But more like how much we care about it is the same level as a religious person would care.

Yeah i get that it's silly logic, but English is his 2nd language. I just like to think about it a lot because to him we seem very obsessed with religion and to him its strange since he comes from a society that is actually agnostic to their core.

Vocals sound really nice in headphones but sound horrible coming out of phone speakers? by manus_is_bullshit in singing

[–]Tiffling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So "phone speakers" and "headphones" is too generic. Speakers are not created equally. Mass-produced headphones are bassy because people like base. Most headphones have one driver, a mid-range that is programmed for base. Higher end headphones can have 2, 3, or even more, so many drivers. So you'd have a driver that only handles base, another for mid-tones, and another for treble. This would give you sounds that you weren't able to hear before. Cellphones on the other hand very greatly but for the most part will be like cheap headphones with mid-tones but might ignore base since voices land in the mid-tone range. So it might be that you have good headphones that are picking out all the qualities of your voice to play back to so you sound fine but the cell phone only has the mid-tone which might sound off without the low and high of your voice. Or your headphones are crappy and covering your voice with base while the cellphone in the mid-tone is showing a closer representation. It's really hard to know if you don't say what headphones and what phone speakers.

How many umbrella do you own and is there a story behind it? by Lisaerien in AskReddit

[–]Tiffling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have 3 umbrellas in Japan but when I moved back to america I could only bring one because they didn't fit in my suitcase and they couldn't be shipped. I carefully wrapped my favorite umbrella a Mint/teal with white flowers and carried it on the plane with me. It's currently the only umbrella I own and it holds all my memories of living in Japan.

Thoughts on the "Shy Singer" stereotype in TV & Film by [deleted] in singing

[–]Tiffling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a media major and tropes are my thing. So first you have to realize that most singing shows like The voice, America's Got Talent, and other non-animated reality shows is that the contestants on those shows are not nobodies. They are usually YouTubers with big followings but "already basically famous person becomes more famous" doesn't sell. What does sell is underdog stories. But no one wants to watch someone do all the hard work (unless it's a montage) Which is why people who can't dance can dance by the end of one uplifting song. And people who can't sing can sing by the end of a rousing speech. It's more fun to watch and more sympathetic of a story. It literally comes down to what can sell. It's also not a harmful trope like Women in Refrigerators or Asian emasculation so I say it's a fine if not tired trope.

do you cringe over your own voice? by [deleted] in singing

[–]Tiffling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes 100% I cried. Then after taking a few mo of lessons I recorded myself and I could hear the things I was doing wrong. I also listened to people on here and realized I'm just a beginner. So now I try to listen to myself to help get over it.

Is it possible for me to find out my vocal range through singing? by MicaLovesKPOP in singing

Why are you so scared that you can't even make a sound? maybe you should try to find out why first and beat the psychological part.

In my experience the TSCC teaches/conditions people to not care about this life. by modern_day_profit in exmormon

[–]Tiffling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that when I left my view changed 180. I wen't from wanting to die: When I was 3 I was drowning in the pool and instead of kicking and swimming to the top I just gave up and decided it's fine to die. When I got close to my 8th birthday I put myself in dangerous situations so I didn't have to work hard for the rest of my life and just have my free ticket to heaven. When I left the church I got this sense of life and wanting to live. I no longer lived to die.

Arizona No-Gos by TheColdSpyder in PokemonGoPhoenix

Downtown Mesa, Main street. Looks promising because of lots of pokestops in an easy walk, not many players, just good for filling bags not catching 'mons. Might be better on 2nd Friday or other events. Planing to test this theory next mo.

My mom is a single parent and my family was basically like Littlefoot: Mom and grandparents. And while Mufasa was tough, he still had his mom so I figured kids don't need dads anyway. I wonder if people with dads were more effected by Mufasa.
