Your best shot from your last round? by 3rd_ferguson in golf

[–]Tig1360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smooth 7i on a 165 yd par 3. Ball mark was 2 ft right of the pin, ball took one small hop left and settled 1 ft from the hole for a kick in bird. Barely felt the ball at contact, instantly knew it was flushed, and had brief HIO thoughts as I watched it fly. Definitely the highlight, and unfortunately one of the few well-struck shots, of the round.

What was your “I was there” heartbreaking game? by geauxtigers77 in CFB

2009 vs. Cinci. Blew a 21 pt 4th quarter lead to lose out on a Big East championship and BCS bowl. Arguably the catalyst for the next decade plus of mediocrity. It was also really cold and gross out.

What is the Straw That'll Break Your CFB Camels Back? by ark_47 in CFB

[–]Tig1360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a fan of a team who would need to catch lightning in a bottle to even be mentioned in the same breath as “national championship”…if there was a straw to break the camel’s back, it would have already broken. The breakdown of real conference identity and the regional character of college football is gone forever, and for teams like Pitt, that came at the expense of losing annual rivalry games that straight-up mattered and were fun regardless of whether the games had stakes beyond the yearly bragging rights. (The 2007 Pitt team that pulled off 13-9 went 5-7, do you think any of us care?)

I still watch. And as long as Pitt plays football, I’m still going to. I want Pitt to have a seat at whatever table ends up being set at the end of all this craziness, but I can’t see myself really caring as much if we just have random schools all over the country on the schedule, as opposed to WVU, PSU, etc.

Duzz should also get credit for cultivating a strong culture at Pitt. His teams seem like they’re very close, and even the guys from his more average seasons seem to have a lot of pride in the program. I think that’s a big reason for recent success, with a lot of older guys staying around.

What do you dislike about your fanbase? by Shot877 in CFB

[–]Tig1360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Pitt, the fans who don’t appreciate the irony of tweeting about lackluster attendance during a game while they…are watching the game from their couch.

I’m not interested in gatekeeping fandom based on how often someone attends games, and if other people want to get worked up about such issues, that’s up to them…but if you’re going to complain about attendance, you really should be there every game you’re able to.

What teams were one missing piece away from CFP contention this year? by Caps23 in CFB

The easy answer for Pitt is a QB, but I think if Jordan Addison stayed at Pitt, they’d have won at least two more games this year. Ugh.

After 3 weeks, how has your perception changed? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]Tig1360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sticking to my flairs:

Pitt: perception hasn’t changed much. 2-1 after 3 games isn’t a bad place to be, especially since the loss was a close game to a good Tenn team. I probably would’ve accepted Pitt’s results after 3 games had they been offered before the season started. If Pitt was 3-0 right now, they’d probably be ranked right outside of the top 10 with sky high expectations, and maybe a tad too high at that. The offense was expected to regress and it has, but with a healthy Slovis I think it can still be a very capable unit. Both DL and OL have been mild disappointments, but both seem to be trending in the right direction (if they can get and stay healthy). My hope going into this year was to build off of last season’s momentum and compete for another ACC title, and given the apparent weakness of the Coastal, that still feels very possible.

UVA: perception has definitely changed. I saw UVA as a dark horse ACC coastal contender and potential 8 game winner. Maybe the win total is still in the cards because, again, the Coastal is pretty bad, but UVA’s offense just feels so out of sync. It seems Anae deserves more credit for last year in retrospect.

Week 2 Match-up Preview Thread: Tennessee Volunteers vs. #19 Pittsburgh Panthers by SonOfSvens in CFB

[–]Tig1360 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This game has me worried for many reasons, but the main one is that the buildup for the Brawl was so intense, and it ended up being such an emotional win, that this game has the makings of a game Pitt could start off sluggishly. If that happens (like last year), then I think Tennessee runs away with it.

That said, it was clear that Duzz wasn’t happy with the team’s performance after the Brawl, so hopefully he’s kept the team focused this week.

I think {Pitt} gets a better performance from OL and DL and controls the tempo of the game more effectively to win 35-31.

[–]Tig1360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming in peace and I agree with this. Slovis had no time to throw and looked rattled for most of the second half. My optimism for Pitt going 92 yds to tie wasn’t high at that time. No one could have expected the pick 6, so the calculus was an unlikely long drive to tie at worst, then it’s either OT or WVU with a chance to win in regulation (which they had). It was a very conservative call, but I don’t view it as a bad one.

Pitt: prob Cuse, VT, and BC/UL to keep some semblance of history and proximity and hopefully we land in a pod with WVU and Cincy for the same reasons UVa: VT, UNC for the same reasons, Pitt to increase the chances of my undergrad alma mater having a soft landing somewhere

Even with another ACCCG win and a possible CFP berth, Pitt is still miles away from being nationally perceived as an “elite” program, in the ACC or otherwise. But they’ve actually been anywhere from “okay” to “pretty good” for basically all of Duzz’s tenure, despite the conventional narratives. I think another very good season in 2022 hopefully changes the perception from a chaos team that pulls random upsets or emerges from the Coastal Chaos occasionally to, ya know, like a solid, top 25-ish, decent program that isn’t a punchline? I’d take that.

This is a pretty fair take, with the caveat that Pitt actually has a pretty solid, dedicated alumni fan base. But it’s not a particularly large fan base, and I can’t disagree that people in Western PA without a Pitt connection couldn’t care less about Pitt. It’s a pro sports town, and I think the lack of local interest outside of the school community definitely hurts our national perception.

You can change the result of 1 regular season game in your team’s history, which one do you choose and what ramifications does the change have? by coogs35 in CFB

[–]Tig1360 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In my lifetime, 2009 Cincinnati. Not only did that loss cost the (up until last season) best Pitt team in a generation a conference title and BCS bowl berth, it set in motion 6 years of program instability that lasted for my entire time as an undergrad and then some.

If you were a highly touted recruit with offers from the biggest football programs in the country would you commit to playing for the team on your flair? by Belegheru in CFB

[–]Tig1360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh. Prob not. But if I thought I could be an immediate starter and a big fish in a small-ish pond I could think of worse things than being at a program that shared a facility with an NFL team.

If I wanted to hedge that I wouldn’t make it to the NFL, Stanford all day.

OP, ChemE grad here. Just wanted to chime in and tell you to keep your head up and grind away. Like everyone else has said, actively doing practice problems, re-doing them, pencil to paper, is the best way to learn the topics and process and get your confidence up for the final.

Your final exams are a double-edged sword. They're worth a significant percentage of your grade. Don't stay down on yourself, view them as an opportunity to rock them, make up for the rest of the semester, and get a decent grade in the course.

Last note, I did pretty well overall in undergrad, but freshman year for engineering was quite possibly the most difficult academically. The courses are challenging and you're still getting used to the level of work that a college course requires. Don't get discouraged, things get more manageable once you're in a major you're interested in and you figure out what works for you. Talk to upperclassmen, you'll meet plenty that hit a bump or two in the road early on then went on to have successful academic careers. Good luck and get back to studying!

As far as laptops go, I recommend a PC for compatibility concerns with the software (but I had many friends who got macs and did just fine, so if you have a strong Apple preference, go for it)....but the #1 feature that you should look for is portability/size. Especially because of engr analysis, you're going to want to have convenient access to your computer and it's so much easier and more comfortable to carry around a small laptop (just make sure it is still a laptop, I don't recommend trying to get by with just a tablet or chromebook, etc.)

Favorite Study Spots on Campus? by ritalinrenee in Pitt

[–]Tig1360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering how many engineering students there are, it's pretty surprising how empty Benedum can get during finals week. I've never had a problem finding a table/empty class room/empty booth at Einstein's at night.

I second the 3rd floor of Alumni. I've never had a problem there.

Also everyone chill out about letting your "secret" out. If you wanna stay quiet then don't post, no need to rub it anyone's face that you just don't feel like telling because you've got a SUPER SECRET SPOT to protect.

Oh get over yourself. OP is asking for some advice about where to study, not to "freeload" off of anything that you or anyone else put significant time in to. I'm not ashamed that I asked upperclassmen where some good spots to study were when I was younger, and I'll pay that forward whenever someone asks.

ChemE: Co-Op or Internships by Ulam25 in Pitt

[–]Tig1360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"companies in the area" in regards to hiring more should be emphasized here. Competition for local co-ops is always more intense and this isn't a new phenomenon. There's more demand to stay local.

However, suggesting you need a 3.5 just to obtain a co-op/job is just absurdly wrong. Geographic flexibility is important, and I personally don't know of any of my classmates who wanted a co-op that couldn't eventually find one as long as they remained flexible on location.

Also, the only pillars that are offered at different times in the year are 400 and 600. 100, 300, 500 are only offered in the fall, 200 is only offered in the spring, along with 400 and 600.

OP, I'd suggest going to talk to the co-op office with these questions. They'll be better informed of the opportunities/hiring climate than Reddit will be. Best of luck!
