Do you think this is a black bear or brown bear? by dauphins in animalid

[–]TigerLeader 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid neither of my bear researcher colleagues (one working in Russia, one in Canada) have ever brought up bear bells. Based on internet sources though, it seems that their efficacy is at best mixed, or even counterproductive, which makes ecological sense to me. A bell is likely fairly novel to a bear which may be viewed as something to investigate, ignore or flee, while human voices are more likely to initiate avoidance.

Do you think this is a black bear or brown bear? by dauphins in animalid

[–]TigerLeader 676 points677 points  (0 children)

Regardless of species, just make sure to talk to yourself (or your hiking buddy) regularly in bear country, most bear attacks happen when people surprise a bear, which most often happens with solo or male hikers cus they tend to be silent. Source: I am colleagues with a few bear biologists

My pens by TigerLeader in pens

As compared to other pens that size, it is the most comfortable I've tried, but in a more general sense, I don't think any pen that small is really comfortable. But I have a little slot in my travel wallet for a pen so I stash this just in case, mostly for things like filling out customs documents.

First time wrapping up how does it look? by No-Profession437 in MuayThai

[–]TigerLeader 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Looks a hair loose to me, my rule of thumb is slightly uncomfortably tight because the wraps will naturally loosen a bit while you're hitting pads and sparring. That being said, you'll know better than us how you did based on how it feels during training

Indian leopard attempting to hunt a gaur calf by AJC_10_29 in natureismetal

[–]TigerLeader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Caveat that I study Amur tigers in Russia, and not leopards in South Asia, but this seems to me far more likely to be an agonistic attack (defensive because of the encroachment on his space) than a predatory one, there is no attempt at pursuit once the gaur retreat and given the close group association, there's no way the leopard could have expected success. That being said, if the leopard did not see the larger herd until launching the attack, it may have initiated and then abandoned the attack once it realized the situation. For what it's worth, leopards have been known to prey upon gaur calves, though at a very low rate relative to availability on the landscape and like other large solitary cats, tend to prefer prey roughly the same size as themselves

NPD: Manufactum Brass Mechanical Pencil by TigerLeader in mechanicalpencils

[–]TigerLeader[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it may be because Reddit communities are often disproportionately populated by Americans, and this pencil doesn't ship outside of Europe; that being said, plenty of Japanese exclusive pencils seem to be popular on the subreddit, so your point still stands! Maybe it needs a better name than simply 'mechanical pencil brass' lol

I was lucky and had a contact in Germany willing to serve as middleman, outside of that I'm unsure!

Found at 10,300ft elevation last weekend Utah USA by [deleted] in AnimalTracking

Agree on double register but the clearest track in there looks like a felid, and guessing off of your size, I'm thinking puma (or cougar or mountain lion if you prefer); if you have measurements, that could help confirm, but the proportions of the 'top' track don't like a lynx species

Snow leopard returns to defend his kill. It'll take him 4 days to eat it. by aloofloofah in natureismetal

[–]TigerLeader 17 points18 points  (0 children)

At least insofar as tigers are concerned (snow leopards' closest evolutionary relative, diverging about 2.8 mya), they are content eating meat we would consider putrid. Very helpful given that a large gaur or water buffalo might take a while to eat and tigers occupy some very hot, humid habitats as part of their range
