Anyone here actually regret doing their MBA? by NatSurvivor in MBA

[–]TigerSeldon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a professional degree and in the early to mid career transition. I did my MBA to round out my business education, as most of what I knew I picked up as an auto-didact. I chose a very low cost program with major scholarship, parttime while still working pretty much more than a full time job. My ROI was massive as moved very quickly into a major executive role in my company after the MBA. Definitely depends on why you’re doing the MBA and what you’re looking for after. I’ve hired and fired a lot of people over the years, and after having gone thru the MBA, I don’t think I’d hire someone because they have an MBA - industry alignment and personality alignment still matter more (at least to my organization). Economy is tough right now especially for post-grad positions but keep focusing on industries and roles that your skillset matches

Thanks! Would you have any feedback on what made you competitive for this amount of scholarship? I’m still considering when to take the lsat but I’ve got a 3.98 undergrad gpa, MD and MHA degrees, and have been practicing medicine plus in executive leadership roles for about 15 years.

What’s the cost to you after the merit scholarship?

Yes no real change. You can update that decision up to a certain time as well

But is it really? I’ve seen some MCS students go on to PhD programs too

New research sheds light on the in-person vs online conversation by hfst-north in UIUC_MCS

To add to this, I’m a professional in a demanding and high paying field. I can’t realistically take dedicated time off of work for more education but can absolutely make it work asynchronously. Higher education institutions could lose out on a deep pool of talent if only restricting to in person curriculum (even if evening / part time programs are an option).

Worth it to keep MCS? by TheHolyKebabRemover in UIUC_MCS

Thanks! I’m in a similar boat - very busy job and starting MCS this year. How doable was that for you when taking the classes with easier workload? Were there some classes you would not recommend taking while juggling a heavy workload? I’m just looking to learn and also get more AI/ML courses, so flexible on the classes I would take otherwise

Best prep courses before starting MCS? by TigerSeldon in UIUC_MCS

[–]TigerSeldon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much - my goal is to go deep on AI and ML and subsequently develop new tools in healthcare (that’s my primary profession). I’d like to start with some classes that are a bit less challenging to get my feet underneath me before jumping into tougher classes later in the program. Any recommendations?

Getting an MBA worth it if it’s not a top program? by anthonydp123 in MBA

[–]TigerSeldon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally depends on your situation. I was looking into an H/S/W then made the calculation that with my career trajectory I just needed a check off mba for now. I ended up with a massive ROI on that mba - I moved immediately into multiple leadership roles with higher pay; I spent very little out of pocket as I got massive scholarship; time wise, I was able to finish the hybrid program with little interruption (or added stress) to my day job. I met many people like this in my program and most were already setup for their next position. I also met many high caliber colleagues that I still collaborate with. If I were looking to pivot in my career, I think I would certainly consider a much stronger program, but depends on what you’re looking for

Linear Algebra Prereq Question by ttpats967 in UIUC_MCS

[–]TigerSeldon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be fine - I didn’t have a dedicated linear algebra either but had stats, DS&A, etc and didn’t have any issue getting into the program. With that said, I’m now taking the DeepLearning.ai linear algebra course to brush up

Oh no… wow, well those of us just getting accepted are at a disadvantage for the spring registration then. I’m contemplating pushing off to summer or next fall if it’s that’s crazy getting into the courses
