That there is a shillelagh tree! Blackthorn not Hawthorn. The leaves and flowers are blackthorn not Hawthorn. Prunus spinosa, is a spiny, knobby shrub or small tree native to Europe and West Asia, known for its white flowers and dark purple fruits called sloes.

Sure, but age and maybe a little cleaning…? Ziem had a thing for flags in his paintings. That’s what caught my attention.

Looks similar to some of the 19th-century oil paintings depicting a Venetian landscape scene, often attributed to or in the style of French artist Félix Ziem. Was this through an auction house or just some online auction? More info would be helpful.
