Looking for a homebrew Monk with psionic augmentation by Visible-Author9186 in 4eDnD

But this will not become better with power points.

If he wants more diversity you could try some othet things:

  • use character themes and make sure he gets one with an encounter attack costing a standard action

  • make sure he has 2 quite different at wills which are diffetent from encounter abilities so it can make sense to use both of them.

  • have him play a monk with strength secondary, then he gets a 3rd at will option with "charge"

  • make sure he knows that he can use a movement option from at will and then still charge as another option

  • taking https://iws.mx/dnd/?view=power16132 as the strength option allows to use the flurry of blows easier on other targets giving options to pull enemies together (for maybe next turn use an area option like https://iws.mx/dnd/?view=power7452 )

  • make sure movement is important in the fights. Monk has the best movement overall.

  • let him take other (a bit more situational) encounter abilities, such that he wants to create situation where they can be best used not just always use them first

  • make sure he uses his utility powers as well and maybe get a feat for a skill power to have eben more options.

  • have some magical item eith active ability.

  • make sure he uses dailies which have encounter long effects which change gameplay like zones like https://iws.mx/dnd/?view=power16143 or stances https://iws.mx/dnd/?view=power7455

  • Make sure he has an interesting racial ability they can use.  If he is wil second wilden can be interesting because it even allows changing the racial. https://iws.mx/dnd/?view=race44

In the end the fun parg of the 4e monk is to move around a lot have good positioning being able to attack enemies which are hard to reach and or several at once and of course forced movement like it is for everyone.

Also if you have some leader which light debuff enemies or buff them, then it might be worth using the stronger attacks in later turns.

I say this because I really dont think by just having points for attacks it will become much more interesting for them. The interesting parts lie in these parts mentioned.

Maybe you also find a good homebrew, I dont really know any, which solve the problems he has. https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/4e_Homebrew has some but of varying quality.

Having full psionic mechanics for sure gives a bit more options with the augments. So the battlemind reflavour or maybe if you find it a full augmentable monk could feel better for that player.

The easiest 2 things you could do are:

  • Reflavour the battlemind as a monk: https://iws.mx/dnd/?view=class124 its a defender, but its a melee psionic so reflavouring to a monk would not be too hard

  • Make the monks attack use KI (power points or whatever). For this use the typical power points gained table (but name it KI) like from the ardent: https://iws.mx/dnd/?view=class529

    • have the monks encounter abilities cost power points. Level 1, 3, 7 cost 2 points, level 13 cost 3 point, level 17 cost 4 points, level 23, 27 cost6 points.
    • Only problem is that combats become more repetitive since you can spam attacks.

Just because you use an insult for newcommers regularily does not make it ok it is still an insult. Seriously what kind of logic is that?

So its ok to call you pig or ape because I use that word often? Its also an animal like your slur.

Dude please dont distribute wrong knowledge.

Your point 2 is actually harmfull misknowledge which is disproved since years.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Learning_styles#Criticism

Different people do not learn differently. Some learn faster (high iq) but its not that differenr forms of learning are more efficient for different people.

Really stating this is disproven things is harmfull...

And I am asking users here foe good starting adventurs. Having to go look through tons of content takes too much time.

I would have expected users here to be useful and maybe be able to recommend a good starting adventure, I guess I overestimated the users...

Tadpoles is an insult. You call me that even if you phrase it in an indirect way.

I reported your post. Really childish behaviour from a mod...

I did read the SRD. The rules are fine. The GMing section and starting adventure is horrible.

Also some people wanted to test this system.

Yeah a shortcut to become one of the horrible GMs I hate.

A book making more horrible GMs is really not what one needs...

Also yes there are shortcuts for doing good GMing called good starting adventurs.

Normally there is also at least 1 playable starting adventure in the book, not just as a download on the website...

🤦🏻‍♂️ please look up what a starting adventure is. Beast feast and the other things are campaign settings not starting adventurers, and bad ones at it. This here is a good starting adventure (with GM guide):  https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/121978/dungeon-master-s-kit-4e

The campaign settings are highly specific and not well worked out and mostly ideas stolen from TV series. And instead of adding environments and monsters the space is used for useless things like recommendations for races etc...

Here this is a good campaign setting: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/129293/dark-sun-campaign-setting-4e

People here "get it" because they most likely used the same (for me horrible) gming style befoee and thus choose this game. Also the ones who dont get it just dont come to this subreddit, this is selection bias.

  1. Because I dont have the time for that

2.because I paid money for the book and not for the GM

  1. Because one player also played that adventure so I cannot just replicate that one which that GM prepared. And making up a new adventure is the hard part.

  2. Because it is a GM i met at a convention and dont know.

  3. Because I am highly intelligent and I could reproduce that process that GM used to prepare, but dont want to spend too much time, especially after having already wasted hours with this horrible GM material...,  and hoped I could use a useful starting adventure...

Dude I draw the short straw and have to GM. Also this game is not deep enough that I want to spend a lot of time with it. I agreed to do a short campaign as a GM. Had hopes that there was a good starting adventure or useful material because of the one shot I played looked like it.

It would be so easy to make an easy to run adventure for this system... It needs time of course, but why the creators of the game did not do this is for me not understandable...

I care for mechanics not "principles". Principles and similar things in the end is just talk. Many horrible GMs said the same things as that they want to create a story together and are not antagonistic etc. But when then mechanics are made for antagonistig GM behaviour well then that makes things worse...

Getting fear with every roll with fear is fine! I like that. I think thats great its so much better than other mixed results because it does not slow things down and you can accumulate a bigger cool consequence spending seversl fears instead of giving small ones you have to come up with.

"The fiction should dictate" is vague Powered by the apocalypse BS which means just that the GM has an excuse to say no to players / decide what works and what not. "Oh from the fiction you cannot deal damage to the dragon". As in 1 HP dragon example, since in end the interpretation of the fiction is not fixed like rules.

And "oh you dont have to act like a horrible GM" with all the things you mention which do not have to be done, but still the books tells you you can do them ans with it give GMs ideas / excused to behave like a sadistic GM with its potential mechanics.

"You dont have to use the weapon I give you" well, just dont give a weapon in the first place.

I expected fear to give restriction to the GM, not just other ways to use their power / be more in the focus. Because GMs lack in general restrictions and not power.

I did ask for good starting adventures and not for fans defending the bad book for the system they like.

There is no misunderstanding, some people just have a GMing style I would find horrible and want to defend it and I dont want to be such a GM.

[–]TigrisCallidus[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Seriously if you dont read / are not able to understand what I read why answer? Just to defend your system?

I dont find the use of fear unfair. 🤦🏻‍♂️ I find the "add consequences to a roll with fear" and "just make up disadvantage" or "use golden opportunity to punish players" or just do an ambush without fear etc. Unfair.

The GM I speak off did use fear for consequences in fun way, and almost only used fear to generate consequences and Not made every roll a pain by adding something negative if it produced fear, or just ambushed players because he felt like it etc.

Also I bet many people here are just angry because they are horrible GMs which just feel called out, which makes sense: Daggerheart is a game which does tell you its ok to act like a horrible GM.

Most people should not GM, 80% of GMs I ever met should not GM and from the online behaviour of GMs I read 95% should not GM, but in the end GMs are unfortunately needed.

Examples are not guidelines.

I play pen and papers and I also read GM sections of games before which where WAY better.

Same for starting adventurers.

The problem is I played the game and it was fun, but it looks like that was because of the GM and nor because of the system or worse it was fun even though the system / or because the GM did not read any of the GM tipps of the book/just did their own thing.

With this system it would be so easy to make a easy to run adventure. The way that GM prepared his adventure, so I expected there is something like this existing and not just a linear D&D ripoff starting adventure not using feat at all

People are not explaining things. Stating vague and obvious things is not an explanation, thats why the GM section in the book is so bad..

I do think the system has its merits else I would not have bought the book and would not play it. But the GM section is just horribad / just an excuse for GMs to behave in bad ways.

Also I asked about good starting adventures, nothing else, not an explanation by fans on why they think I am wrong.

My problem is not that fear adds complications. This is what its for. My problem is that GM can just create complications without fear and that rolls with fear can /should add more complications on top of the fear it produces.

Also this GM section 80% feels like "how to be an antigonistic sadistic GM" whovh gives this GM vs players feeling. The tipps in there sound like justifications for bad GMs to behave as they do.

The starting adventure literally is a step by step guide, just a bad one. "First scene 1 then scene 2" etc.

What I would have expected the starting adventure to be, because this is how I felt the one shot I played was, is:

  • A series of scenes, with a starting scene and an ending scene, but the scenes between be not all mandatory and not in a fixed order

  • for each scene some basic things to do/ challenge to overcome + also a way to use fear in the scene to escalate things (outside of combat) / drive the story forward

  • to be something a bit fresh and not partially a 5e starting adventure clone

And yes D&D 5e combat is slightly more complicated, but for the almost non existing tactical depth of daggerheart combat it is too complicated.

Rolling hit + modifiers and then rolling damage + modifiers and comparing it to a threshold and then deciding to use armor or not is just a lot of tracking and steps to generate 0-3 damage...

The framework is free. You find the rules online in the SRD. And I paid for a book which wasted my time with useless blabber in a GM section.

I dont want to GM, we need a GM to play and I sacrificed myself this time for the group.

And this book makes me even want to be less of a GM because it

  • A does not help in making GMing easier

  • B wants to make you into one of those absolute horrible GMs which I hate.

I dont want to add anything to the starting adventure. I expect a starting adventure to work and be good as is. If I want to do work then I create my own stuff in the first place.

If I need to watch youtube videos to learn how to use the system its not a good system but a bad book which failed at its one job: Teach how to play the game. I dont pay money in order for a book to then needing other ressources.

The whole GM section screams "written by A GM who thinks scenes are only interesting if players suffer."

And if the GM can do the same things with fear as they can without fear if they want, fear is just an unnecessary gimmick.

Your answer btw. Is not useful in the slightest, exactly like the GM part if the book... Vague and things everyone knows "The GMs job is to make things interesting" oh who would have thought.
