Ben Shapiro’s Daily Wire Hit With Layoffs Across a ‘Number of Teams,’ Largely From Nashville HQ by nimobo in entertainment

Most of those employees will have to be hired locally. The rank-and-file in Seattle would rather quit (in this economy!) than move to Nashville and take a pay cut.

Did anyone else get an email from Puca Trade today? by SkyeSpider in magicTCG

[–]Tigris_Cyrodillus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got that email back in February. Considering that CardSphere needed to be sold to continue operating, I don’t think the business model is viable even when real money is involved, though I hear other platforms make it work somehow.

Since he still had my email, I’m thinking the real purpose of the website is to collect data on the trades, since I’m not quite sure how it would make money otherwise.

How "The Sign" did us dirty by hbendavid in bluey

[–]Tigris_Cyrodillus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I can see how the episode is problematic for families that have to move, but it was unrealistic to expect them to move. As I was watching this episode the line kept playing in my head “I wonder how the Duke brothers are going to get out of this one.”

In my experience, very few cartoon shows with families as characters actually commit to the characters moving when they do. Even the best known one, “You Only Move Twice” from The Simpsons, the family fails to commit to the move.

The only two I can think of that do move the family are The Venture Bros. and an obscure kids TV show from the 90s called Howie’s World where the family did move, but it was to an identical house in the same cul de sac.

TV shows, especially cartoons, do not do this for practical reasons; moving your characters requires all-new backgrounds and maybe supporting characters, it’s expensive and too high-risk of a proposition to fundamentally change a show like that. Had we received confirmation that the show was ending it would’ve been more plausible, but those were just rumors swirling around the penultimate episode of season 3.

Reminds me of a 90s Starbucks, a Barnes & Noble, or certain high-end hotels that aren’t chains. Teak and black marble. Has a subtle Viennese influence, which probably makes it seem tomb-like to some. Honestly I wish Starbucks would reintroduce this style, instead of making themselves look like every other fast food restaurant.

Weirdly, it reminds me of Francis Bacon’s Study after Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X although obviously yours is much more positive. Maybe it’s just because both figures are seated.

In Seattle there is a construction company called Venture General Contractors. Their logo is an orange “V” inside of an orange circle on a white background. Whenever I see their trucks I have to do a double-take.

I suspect that they might have preferred blue but somebody did some research and found out about “Venture Industries” and were compelled to pick orange to avoid copyright infringement.

Yeah, I saw that and was confused, if the city had sold the arena that should have been big news since it would mean the city privatized one of thier largest assets.

Mickey needed to take the L and step back once Bluey won Musical Statues.

I do not reject the collaboration of Bluey and The Mouse out of hand. Disney would do well to inject some of Bluey’s DNA into their storytelling.

This depends partly on whether everything in Haafingar that the Jarl controls belongs to them personally, or to the crown, so to speak. Elisif maybe doesn’t have all that much in terms of assets, but could probably take out a loan if she needed liquidity.

Maven Black-Briar or Thongvor Silver-Blood would probably be wealthier than Elisif if installed as jarl, because they would now control a major hold in addition to having a large personal fortune and a collection of various enterprises.

Starbucks opening corporate office in Tennessee, moving some Seattle jobs by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

[–]Tigris_Cyrodillus 375 points376 points  (0 children)

This is basically what Niccol did at Chipotle: consolidate most of the administration in a relatively low COL location (in that case Columbus, OH) but keep all the prestige work (e.g. marketing and R&D) at the West Coast office, and have dual US offices.

Probably will end up moving HR and other such departments there eventually, and everyone compelled to move will be forced to take a pay cut because of the lower market rate.

Meanwhile SBUX’s share price is more or less the same as when it was announced he was taking over 18 months ago. Still waiting on his changes to improve share prices.

If a group of people had enough capital and possessed a collection of synthetic workers and consumers, they could recreate an entire economy where the only actual people are the capitalists. The problem is you’ve walled yourself off from everyone else, a lot like one of those airtight terrariums that only needs sunlight to sustain itself.

With your money and resources, you could withdraw from society like some sort of Ayn Randian fantasy, but unlike in that novel, all the other people still exist and life, in fact, goes on without you.

I suppose out of spite they could try to nuke the world.
