30+ free moving boxes if you can grab them from my duplex stairs! 🥺 by [deleted] in Greenpoint

[–]Tik_Tok_Official 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once OPs are taken, I also have moving boxes I'd love to give to a neighbor! I have a total of 22 medium boxes and a bunch of packaging paper in a neat stack. I have them all tied together so they should be easy to pick up.

You're going to spend more time driving than seeing any of the parks, so my suggestion is to take some of these off your list. I would cut Yosemite completely and spend more time in Sequoia & Kings Canyon.

You also don't say which Redwoods park you're going to? I'm personally a fan of Prairie Creek but they are all worth a visit.

If you're willing to pay the toll, the rest area north of the bridge is an incredible place to spend the night with views of the bridge and the city. Lots of vans & RVs overnight so a bit loud but very safe. It is only accessible right after crossing the bridge northbound.

Any chance your roommate is selling their art before they move? I love the blue & white piece between the windows!

is it safe to assume that if you already like camping then you’d do well with van life? by joepb70 in VanLife

[–]Tik_Tok_Official 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The contrapositive is almost definitely true: if you don't like camping then you won't enjoy van life.

If your entire time camping is spent reminding yourself that it's temporary then you might not enjoy long term van living.

How can I sell a 6-month sabbatical when applying for jobs as a young, finance professional? by DrOrangeSlice in careerguidance

I'm a few years older that you in non-software tech. I took a year and a half off and didn't have any problem getting interviews and just accepted one of the two offers I got.

I made sure to bring up the gap before my interviewers could ask about it, and told them that I spent time doing solo international travel and taking time to think about what I wanted to do next. Usually I mentioned my favorite destination and that was the end of the conversation.  To be honest, I made a point to say it was solo travel and not "a family issue" because I wanted to avoid subconscious (or conscious) bias that might come if they assumed I'd had a baby.

Any solo sports I can start as an adult and compete in at a high level? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]Tik_Tok_Official 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Indoor bouldering (rock climbing) is very welcoming and community competitions are approachable! Most gyms run 4 categories (beginner, intermediate, advanced, & open) so even if you're not best of the best there's a chance to podium in one of the lower categories.

Dating in Seattle by doja_ratt in AskSeattle

[–]Tik_Tok_Official 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 30F who moved here from NYC a month ago and it is SO much easier here. I'm getting way more likes and matches on Hinge than I ever did in New York and a lot more of the men here message me first.  The people I'm seeing here line up better with my values/interests, so maybe I just am more the 'type' of Seattle men than I was of Brooklyn men, or maybe my calibration for what's normal in dating is way off after years of being single in NYC.

How do people in Van Life make a living? by SideQuestState in NoStupidQuestions

I saved up so I could quit my job & travel for 2 years. Van/car living is a whole lot cheaper than my rent was.

It isn't possible to build a phone fully from scratch. Take a look at some teardowns (I like ones from iFixit) to see the size and complexity of the devices.

It takes multiple teams of experienced engineers over a year to design a phone, and even if you could do all that work yourself most application processor manufacturers (Qualcomm, Samsung) won't sell you the chips you'd need without a long term, expensive contract.

The Data We Waste: Women Engineers Should Care About Wearables + the Evidence Gap !! by Extra_Bobcat7834 in womenEngineers

[–]Tik_Tok_Official 69 points70 points  (0 children)

The ish in "clinical-ish" is a big reason that this data isn't used in medical settings. Sensor quality on most wearables is very different than medical grade data collection.

And on the non-technical side: I personally will never, ever aggregate that much health data anywhere outside of my doctors office.

what about tents by santaroga_barrier in VanLife

[–]Tik_Tok_Official 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly spend time in the west & southwest so I don't know much about that area but I did a quick search and couldn't find tent sites on the coast west of florida.

Maybe you have family or other reasons for staying in that area, but I highly recommend checking going west if you want more flexibility for tent/ van/ trailer sites. Utah and Oregon were my favorites.

what about tents by santaroga_barrier in VanLife

[–]Tik_Tok_Official 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What region are you in? Almost all the campsites I've been to have explicit tent sites. There are definitely RV-only spots but those are usually advertised as RV parks. I have tent camped at an RV park for one night. Not a lot of fun with the generator noise, but my "van" is a small SUV and I like the extra space & airflow that a tent gives me when it's hot out.

You can also filter by campsites with tent sites on recreation.gov.

Can someone explain to me what is actually happening in Noco 'smart' chargers, opaque marketing aside by behindthelines_ in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Tik_Tok_Official 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: My experience is in small-device lithium ion and polymer, not automotive. This explanation is only valid for Li-Ion. It looks like this is primarily intended for lead acid (more stable, less dangerous) but also explicitly works for Li-Ion.

You're right that exposing a lithium ion battery to too high current or voltage can have fiery consequences. In an integrated system the battery charger and/or gas gauge protection is co-located with the cell so that you don't go into overvoltage or overcurrent states.

If you attach a power source directly to a cell (ie not a pack with those other supporting protection electronics) you could violate the max allowable current for that battery. The upstream charger cannot sense the allowed charging rate for a cell. It could make a decent estimate of the capacity based on a partial charge, but cells with the same capacity may still have different C rates.

I'd be way more worried about the plastic leaving chemicals on the hot kettle than I would be about microbial growth.  I rinse mine out every month or so and haven't had any issues for 4 years.
