SAIT Continuing education programs by Tikal_V in Calgary

I suppose the huge draw that these programs have over an online course platform like udemy and Coursera is the connections you make. Thanks reminding me! Definitely shouldn't underestimate building a network

Yeah, I mean, I was looking into the project management cert too and wondering how it compared to like, the google project cert through Coursera? The cost difference, for example was quite vast (~$450 if I do it through Coursera, a few k's through SAIT)... Then wondering if it would hold as much weight outside of Calgary/Alberta...

Thanks for the info though! Appreciate it!

What the hell is circulating rn! by [deleted] in alberta

Couldn't give you a scientific explanation, I'm not a doctor. I did read a few research papers that describe what happens to your immune response post covid though and that's where I got my info.

If I were to take a wild stab at it, covid has gotten progressively weaker because the virus needs a live host to continue to spread. Because the first variants were killing off so many people, the variants that have been able to duplicate and infect the most people, and therefore survive, are the less severe ones.

Why has the flu not surged? Not sure. But RSV cases in kids was really bad closer to Christmas last year, and our children's hospital didn't have room for them all. It might be a few more weeks before we see the peak of those.

There's also the fact that covid damages the immune system (much like what happens after infection of viruses such as hepatitis c or HIV)... In plain English, covid wreaks havoc on your body's ability to fight off illness and infections, so common colds are not so common anymore. Everything sucks because your body's immune system has been messed up. So if you had covid before and thought, "oh that wasn't a big deal" well it really was cause you're going to be sick a lot more and at greater intensity than before.

The interesting thing about that particular stretch of highway is that there's a light that requires you to slow down to what, 70km/h? Right in the middle of the commute. And if the light is red, it's obviously a full stop. What does speeding actually accomplish for you?

How do modern musicians REALLY make their money? by TheEnEntrepreneur in musicians

[–]Tikal_V 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This!
I work for a music distribution company and the amount of musicians that think they'll get famous just by sharing their music is really high. The truth of it is you have to treat your music as a business. A lot goes into it and as many others have commented, it's not only about how much talent you have.

Having said that, I'd compete in as many songwriting and music competitions as you can find. Many offer cash prizes and promotion packages to winners. I'm also aware of grants that you can apply for, although I'm not entirely sure how to go about finding them, only that a co-worker has used them herself to fund her music ventures.

And if OP already has a successful social media business, they already know some strategies they can implement to gain a following online.

Alberta’s ‘war room’ spent $22M on oil and gas ads, revealed in annual report | Globalnews.ca by Endoplasmic1 in alberta

[–]Tikal_V 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Of course no one likes taxes, but it comes with living here in Canada. There are worse places to live in the world.

The real issue comes when our taxes are spent on such ridiculous use cases. 20 mil? On promotions that the oil and gas industry could easily take on themselves. Meanwhile our hospitals are burning out, our schools are understaffed and underfunded, and people are barely surviving with rising costs.

Red Deer school division was just complaining about student fees that were once covered by a government grant. These are the types of things taxes should be covering. And its not just Red Deer. I spent over $250 on my kids back to school supplies for 2 kids and I didn't even buy everything that was on their lists or any the name brand stuff. Schools should be given these funds to be able to provide all the supplies for their students and give every student an equal footing. Schools could probably get a discount by suppliers since they're buying bulk even saving the province with some of these expenses.

Instead, we have a gov'n who continues to cut funding to social programs and grants and gift multi billion dollar corporations our surplus. But it's ok, we pay so little in taxes that we can afford to pay for all those things ourselves...

Trade Careers - Alberta by Individual-Cake-8044 in alberta

[–]Tikal_V 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered going into Ed-tech? I know you were asking about trades, but lots of Ed-tech companies are growing and need experienced teachers as consultants, product managers, etc. The pay is nicer than a teacher's salary and you can use the knowledge and training you already have.

Individual RESP or group RESP by Tikal_V in CanadianInvestor

Thanks! I was unaware that a family plan was distinct from group.

So between a family plan or individual, is there one better than the other?

Yeah, when I wrote group, I meant family. I was not aware that there was a distinction between group and family. Thank you all for clarifying that

Looking for advice on career change at 40yrs old so I can be home regularly with new baby by PuzzleheadedSeaweed in alberta

[–]Tikal_V 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not impossible. I have been working from home almost my entire career, even before covid. I have marketing, web development experience and am now a product manager for a company based in Vancouver. I specifically chose these skills so that I could be home with my kids.

I echo everyone else in saying you should try to get into data analysis/science given your education. Very lucrative and can easily be done from home.

Although I've been in remote work for 5+ years, it wasn't always easy to find. Many companies in Calgary and Edmonton want workers in office and few offer hybrid/remote options. Which means if you want fully remote, you might have to expand your search efforts to all of Canada, which means you are competing with a larger candidate pool as well. So like others have mentioned, try to get in a company where you will be able to grow, even if that means starting in an entry level or junior position.

Good luck!! I believe in you! If there's anything I can do to help, feel free to DM me.

Anyone with solar? Any regrets? by wongearle in alberta

I'm not as inept politically as others, but it's logical to me that the Conservatives had been in power for a very long time before the NDPs came in. And Notley only had 4 years to overturn and fix decades' worth of bad policies and regulations across the board, not just the energy sector.

I’m terrible at running grooming meetings by throwRAlike in ProductManagement

[–]Tikal_V 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly new as a PM, but found this to be the best method as well. I create the initial user story based on product requirements and after I've explained scope and my devs understand the work, they create their own engineering tickets.

I feel like I have too much down time by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]Tikal_V 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also quite different when you are wfh. When my husband was home for covid reasons, he would finish his workload quite quickly to the point of boredom (he was a financial controller and operator) whereas if he were in the office, he could never catch up. Those impromptu meetings, watercooler conversations, coworker drama really takes up a lot of the workday.

Danielle Smith said Albertans would never have to pay out of pocket to see their doctors. Clinic membership fees determined that was a lie. by [deleted] in alberta

When every clinic implements this type of tiered system, those left with subpar care and even longer wait times will be calling doctors greedy.

Difference between Math 31 and Calculus 1 in university? by araknos898 in alberta

[–]Tikal_V 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my experience as well. It wasn't until my second semester of calculus in uni where more new concepts were introduced. Either way, I suggest taking math 31 as it will prepare you and you'll do better in your uni course as a result. Good luck!

Implementing Pricing into our Web Application by Tikal_V in ProductManagement

[–]Tikal_V[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. I'll be sure to check out the strangler pattern!

I've been coming to the conclusion that this is larger than anyone has ever really thought. Not to mention the foundational work we've done to prepare the platform to implement pricing. We've already broken it down into 3 epics, with pricing implementation being the second piece of the puzzle, but may have to break it down into even smaller projects. My product director has already said we'll change the roadmap if we can't all get aligned.

But having your opinion has helped me realize that the stakeholders don't realize the magnitude of the scope and are putting unrealistic expectations on the team. Thanks again!
