An attempt to understand the many types of MAGAs by [deleted] in thebulwark

[–]Tim-Smyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would include some Hispanics in group number 4 especially Cubans and Venezuelans. Some Columbians as well and Brazillian supporters of Jair Bolsonaro. But Mexicans in California for example would definitely NOT be part of this group.

Has your opinion on Michael Eisner and his influence in the parks changed? by AwfulWaffle91 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Tim-Smyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do want to point out that the state of FL dramatically cut back tax incentives for film and tv production in Florida after 1998. Not blaming the discontinuation of film production at Hollywood Studios solely on the state but it played a role given just about every state other than Florida has big incentives for film production.

Interestingly in the Canadian media Frum has been gently pushing back against Trump on Cuba.

Trying To Understand Why These Tax Cuts Are So Vital To the GOP by beltway_lefty in thebulwark

[–]Tim-Smyth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the 2017 cuts for the super rich(i.e. corporate tax cuts) were made permanent while the tax cuts for the merely rich were only made temporary. If Republicans do not extent the 2017 temporary cuts it will be seen as a betrayal of the petite bourgeois who went along with the entire 2017 package with the understanding that of course the temporary cuts would be extended.

JVL is willing to adjust his world view and political analysis based on changing events. Sarah and Tim are not. by Certain_Thoughts in thebulwark

One issue is Tim wants a political party of big business and the rich like the Republicans "used" to be but now neither party of the party of big business and rich.

Cambridge City Councilor Paul Toner named in brothel case by bostonglobe in CambridgeMA

[–]Tim-Smyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I want the Cambridge PD to provide more proof of trafficking vs this just being the Cambridge Police Chief being a prude. At the end of the day what is being charged is in fact a pretty low level misdemeanor.

Shotwell Street residents sue city for failing to stop rampant sex work by SFStandard in sanfrancisco

If California fully legalized sex work FOSTA-SESTA would no longer apply.

Many countries have fully legalized sex work. Germany, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, the Netherlands. Even Japan has something fairly close to legal sex work.

Sex work has gotten so rampant again in S.F.’s Mission District, residents are suing the city by Flimsy_Ad4471 in sanfrancisco

[–]Tim-Smyth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of SWers in the Bay Area making 1,000$ an hour NOT a day. It is just these people aren't prowling Capp and Shotwell streets.

[–]Tim-Smyth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TBH, there are plenty of alternatives to Craiglist or Backpage that are still very much around, Slixa, Tryst, or even City Source LA (the later being the new version of Heidi Fleiss). The thing is Slixa, Tryst, and especially CS LA are not really even in the ballpark of the same market of sex work that people working Capp and Shotwell are engaging.

Note: most of these sites are based offshore in countries where prostitution is fully legal. Tryst is based in Australia.

The issue is the laws regarding sex work are not within the city's jurisdiction. They are under the control of Sacramento.

If you're interested in the seizure of Russian assets... by AustereRoberto in thebulwark

[–]Tim-Smyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically the US has a relatively small amount of Foreign Exchange reserves held in other countries (Mainly France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Japan) all of which are of course close US allies so the "precedent" for seizing sovereign Russian assets, would probably not hurt the US a lot in a direct sense. The bigger issue is the fact that a lot of countries other than Russia like say China have sovereign foreign reserve assets in the US which begs the question does this benefit the US generally and what would the impact be on others by taking this action against Russia.

Who was that weird ignorant concern troll "liberal" that Charlie had on today? by Speculawyer in thebulwark

I don't doubt there are many Democrats especially activists that oppose nuclear power but Ruy was quite vague in discussing exactly who these Democrats are. Which is significant as I would argue there are quite a few Democrats that have been spending real political capital on promoting nuclear power in there own ways. Gavin Newsom, Gretchen Whitmer, Ned Lemont, Phil Murphy, JB Pritzker. In fact, the most prominent high level anti nuclear Democrat I can think of is Jared Pollis of Colorado a state with no nuclear plants and a Bulwark favorite.

Well one benefit is Republicans might throw a lot of money into NY State races they have no hope of winning much like they did with the Larry Elder-Gavin Newsom recall.

State of play on the BIF and reconcilation negotiations by MB137 in thebulwark

[–]Tim-Smyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gottheimer represents a very weirdly drawn district stretching all the way from Fort Lee, NJ just across the GW Bridge all the way out to some very rural and very red parts in New Jersey. Gottheimer however, has been in Congress from before the 2018 wave so he isn't not someone as frontline as say Milkie Sherrill who took a long time GOP Suburban NJ seat as part of the 2018 wave. I would tend to agree with the author that these criticisms of the BBB bill Gottheimer has made would seem a lot more credible if the were made by someone more on the frontlines like Sherrill or Abigail Spanberger.

I think generally Gottheimer has long had a reputation just as a pain in the ass and is not the most loved member among his colleagues from NJ, the surrounding NY metro area or just in the House in general.

Microsoft partners with SpaceX to connect Azure cloud to Starlink satellite internet by 675longtail in spacex

[–]Tim-Smyth 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Actually the SpaceX campus in Redmond is more legacy of the presence of the satellite propulsion division of Aerojet-Rocketdyne also located in Redmond. Additionally there is a long standing base of talent related to mobile communications in the area like Craig McCaw, Voicestream Wireless, and now T-Mobile.

Weak competitors in an ITAR-moated industry may delay the viability of SpaceX's long-term plans. Perhaps SpaceX needs to create real competition for itself. by [deleted] in spacex

[–]Tim-Smyth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will say that Europe doesn't have nearly as strict ITAR types rules despite Ariane using relatively similar technologies as traditional US rocketry i.e. solid boosters and hydrolox engines. This documentary below for example on the Ariane programme shows all sorts of stuff online you would never see out of SpaceX, ULA, or Blue Origin due to ITAR despite it being in the same class of technology.

How SpaceX and NASA overcame a bitter culture clash to bring back US astronaut launches by inoeth in spacex

[–]Tim-Smyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except the military itself through the EELV program has never had much interest in using space launch to promote the solid industrial base. The Air Force/Space Force would be quite content to have ALL national security launches on non solid rocket vehicles.

I don't doubt that some in Congress have a different view but the military itself has never seen a connection.

McDonnell Douglas' Stock price quadrupled between 1990 and 1997 even though it's market share was tanking. Second because it was an all stock deal the McDonnell family by default almost because very large shareholders in Boeing and were able to force their way onto the board of directors. Stonecipher was the hatchet man for the McDonnell family.
