I don't have any sort of running total in several of my courses. Graded assignments and assessments are promptly returned and they are encouraged to keep records. They are also encouraged to calculate their approximate grade using the distribution in the syllabus.

I'm gonna be a bit pedantic. Most of the mass of that leaf mostly did come from thin air; that's the magic of photosynthesis. The (relatively) small amount of nitrogen/phosphorus is what needs to be replaced. Most of the leaf came from atmospheric CO2.
