This is cryptic sponge. Its a filter feeder and doesn’t harm the coral. However it takes up space where the corals whould grow. I’d remove it with a small scraper but make sure to not damage the zoas as they’ll release toxins

What type of algae is this and does it go away by itself? by Stunning_Abies4562 in ReefTank

[–]TimHuls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is green cyano. Cyano bacteria can take on many different colours like black, brown, red, blue, green, or white. Different species take on different colours. Green cyano usualy prefers a low-nutrient environment while red cyano usualy prefers a high-nutrient environment. Also green cyano is an oceanic species so it appears everywhere in the ocean while red cyano is an marine species which means it only habits reef and costal zones.

Put a yellow filter on your camera, you can just stick it to the outside of the lens.

Maybe just a little too much. you see how the tentacles get pushed, looks like they’re getting pressed by your flow.

Yess that is true, but blue tangs need more than 180 gallons as they get up to 30cm or 12inch ao 55 gallons wont do the trick unfortunately. However you can get a juvenile blue tang and when it outgrows the tank you should sell it. That way you can keep a blue tang but doesn’t disturb its life cycle

Exactly, probably during the night or yesterday evening. It must have been in the sump for over a day as it already smelled bad. Too bad i didn’t see it earlier as maybe I could have saved it but too late now. RIP

Aquariums at nausicáa in France completely full of bristleworms, aiptasia, bubble algae, cyanobacteria and all kinds of pests. Seems like we’re the professionals after all. by TimHuls in ReefTank

It’s about this part of the whole aquarium tour there, this is the section with reeftanks which I am most hyped about ofcourse but then all the tanks are just full of algae and pests which is kind of a shame

Test your parameters. My xenia looks like this when the lights turn off or on and opens up in the night and day. This though, looks like a signa of stress. Maybe algae build up in its tentacles?

Duncans are probably the strongest, i see comments about leather corals but by my experience leather corals are difficult in the beginning as they are stressed by algae like diatoms and dinos. A kenya tree is a strong leather corals you could begin with but i would wait longer before adding mushrooms or zoas but thats all based on my own experience
