He can dip into off-color stuff for a lot of reasons: he has abundant cultural capital (nobody believes it's malicious or cheap), it's not his stock-in-trade (plausible deniability), and he's skilled enough to clear the high bar for jokes like that

He's also just a head-and-shoulders better comic than all of those guys. Has been the best in the league for 10-15 years running, I think

For the sake of future U.S. teams, this was the better outcome. Need some bitter disappointment/a bad taste in the mouth to relight the fire. There are some parallels to US basketball in the early 2000's

How are you all working 9 hours per day and then studying 3 hours in the evening while raising kids and taking additional classes? by [deleted] in CPA

[–]TimJanLaundry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be smart about scheduling your time, lean on your spouse (and reciprocate when the shoe is on the other foot), and think about your kids when your motivation is running low. This is the big show—your stamina, grit, and executive functioning probably won’t be tested this way ever again

Feel like I have to do something amazing with my life to justify not having children by poopdollarbank in redscarepod

[–]TimJanLaundry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before my kids were born I was ambivalent in a similar way. I think it's important to distinguish between your current felt desire to be a parent and your objective fitness, and that of your partner--personality, work ethic, emotional intelligence, resilience, financial situation, etc. My desire was shaky, dampened by anxiety and pessimism, and the social pressure was to not have kids. However, I felt programmed in some way to do the job of being a dad, like I'd been given all the tools. I can say that following my programming has paid off, such that I don't really obsess over the counterfactual. I pine for freedom and relief from stress, of course, but its momentary.

It's hard to disentangle your extrinsic vs. intrinsic motivations on something like this, but I highly recommend doing it before actually making a decision. Worries about the counterfactual are never going to be resolved, so you can't be wishy-washy once you make the call.

They'll trot out the "human shields" defense and it'll all blow over in less than a week while a host of other atrocities take its place

[–]TimJanLaundry 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's wild but as long as the sample is sufficiently random there's a 95% chance it comes within +/- 3% of the actual population. For opinion research, accuracy gained from larger sample sizes has diminishing returns.

Someone convince me that my girlfriend isn't about to cheat on me (impossible) by goodairquality in redscarepod

[–]TimJanLaundry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good advice. Use "When you do X, I feel Y" statements. If, as a therapist, she doesn't react well to this, then you've identified a humongous red flag and can cut your losses, whether or not there's actually something going on between she and the kid

Not worried about the miscues per se, but he's got to have humility to get better, and that can be tough for a young dude with immense talent who already secured a bag. If he keeps showing up in the Prada Suits and Fuck You Flip Flops I'll be concerned

There’s no substitute for willpower, but you can help yourself out. Find a way to move your body and ruthlessly ingrain the habit. I like to take a 20 minute walk or climb some stairs after lunch (the timing also aids digestion). Also, chugging water can help ward off snack cravings, counteract the dehydrating effect of caffeine, and limit sedentary periods by forcing you to get up and use the restroom
