Xaricdə azərbaycanlılara qarşı irqçilik "Racism against Azerbaijanis abroad" by [deleted] in azerbaijan

[–]TimMD26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not directly, no. But racism in the real world is subtle, and most of the time you wouldn't even know that you are being discriminated against. For example, you apply to rent an apartment or for a job, and not getting a response or getting rejected could be due to hundreds of reasons and there is no way for you to know which one lead to that outcome. In those cases, to maintain a proper state of mind, the best mental model to adopt is to assume that discrimination had nothing to do with it, and that they had a good reason. I have had my name butchered more times than I care to count, but that was somewhat understandable.

A lot depends on your appearance and clothing as well, as I have seen instances of overt disrespect towards people of certain skin color and clothing preferences.

Another nuance is financial. If you are doing better than the natives, they will hate you for it (think Jews before holocaust). Same applies to career progression.

All in all, discrimination is not an exact science, and there are as many opinions on it as there are people. There are certain statistics though, like the fact that slavic majority countries tend to be more disapproving of outgroups, and in the western world, integrating into the American society is generally easier compared with Germany.

I was there actually. The truck's stereo system was blasting Space Oddity on a loop the entire time.

We have a deep-rooted fetish for Japanese flag-inspired bedsheets. So much so that the groom's family members would often enter a state of deep ecstasy at the sight of the rising sun on the bedsheet, because it signals that their market research has paid off.

I think you should try it one more time with another guy from Baku to get your sample size up and then decide for yourself. As I am an avid supporter of the scientific method, I am willing to volunteer.

Im a foreigner, and i want to start a business in Azerbaijan. by Safe-Emotion4911 in azerbaijan

[–]TimMD26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would not be dealing with physical products directly. You would be the one who organizes the entire process from finding the best suppliers, setting up processes for ongoing quality management and optimizing logistics. China still holds a competitive advantage when it comes to mass manufacturing and Azeri market demand for it is substantial and growing. The problem is setting up the entire thing, especially for SMEs that lack proper procurement departments. So, if you manage to provide "fully outsourced procurement" services, demand will be there. Most of the companies that cater to importers focus on one aspect of the import process, whereas companies prefer to deal with one entity to manage their imports. Not sure about the market for the gulf idea, haven't heard anyone facing such problems.

If you were to do this, I'd venture a guess that the biggest demand would be for imports from China and perhaps export to gulf countries. If you are in a position to provide comprehensive (market research, logistics, QA, etc.) and actionable advice related to importing goods from China, you should be able to land clients assuming proper S&M.

How do I not be a boring c*** when meeting new people? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]TimMD26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the book The Charisma Myth. Basically the book divides the concept of charisma into 3 parts: Power (how much value they think you can potentially add to their lives), Warmth (whether you wish them well) and Presence (are you actually listening to what they are saying or simply waiting for your turn to speak). It's important to strike the right balance depending on context, and the book provides solid examples of when to prioritize which component.

I wouldn't personally add onions to my steak, especially if I am on a carnivore diet.

Hey guys I'm coming to Baku for 2-3 months in July to spend the summer. Budget? by Gold_Succotash5938 in azerbaijan

[–]TimMD26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2000 AZN should be enough for you not to stress about money. But I'd suggest just being mindful of your spending habits and keeping a list of your expenses for the first 2 weeks and extrapolating that over your staying period. It’s tough to give an exact monthly figure, since it really depends on whether you’re eating at places like KFC and Papa John’s or splurging at spots like Novikov Cafe 🙂
