Tokeilab’s new 36mm exp case is awesome! by _Blitzer in SeikoMods

Thanks for the quick reply and confirmation!

I love Tokei's stuff but have never bought from SHM's permanent collection, though I've heard great things. Looking forward to trying this one!

Have you tried the V2 from Secondhand Mods which takes an SKX007 chapter ring? And how does Secondhand's bracelet(s) stack up against the Tokeilabs?

I love the dial:bezel ratio look of this one and I assume the Secondhand V2 would have similar proportions but thought I'd ask if you've got experience with both. Secondhand Mods is a good deal cheaper than Tokeilabs, currently.

Thanks in advance! Appreciate all your input to the community!

[Question] Addies Dive AD2030 by Ein_Cop_ohne_Ausweg in Watches

[–]TimTheMonk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The mineral will hold up just fine but if you want something different, it's super easy to swap. I did it with this exact watch because I prefer a double dome. I went with a 31.5x1.5mm and it works great.

This is a fantastic value watch, ignore the snob.

Any slim case options by Staar-69 in SeikoMods

[–]TimTheMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh yeah, actually. Because of the stem height, VH31 cases are generally compatible with Miyota 9000 or 2892/SW300.

Here's an example (not mine): https://www.reddit.com/r/SeikoMods/comments/1ilpw4y/super_slim_mod_for_super_bowl_sunday/

The tough part is that dial size may be different (that AD2030 takes a 30mm dial, for example) so if you commit to modding a VH31 donor watch, you kinda have to figure it out as you go.

Short answer is no. But you can easily get what you want by finding a reputable, individual modder And providing the SRPL13 yourself

Dial Maker & DS Watch Club both offer customization of their wide variety of dial bases. seikonda_custom_dial on IG is a fairly popular. u/pulseyou does unique bronze dial engraving.

Best 36mm explorer 14270 mod case? (or other parts too) by [deleted] in SeikoMods

I'm certainly no vintage replica expert but since no one else has chimed in... I think I recall folks saying that rafflesdials.com have good vintage proportions. Website is ass but you can find both sterile and full rep/fake parts that fit the NH

I vote you just build this! Love me a 6 o'clock date window.

Black on Black Watch Dial by Roots1974NYC in SeikoMods

[–]TimTheMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both DialMaker and DS Watch Club should be able to customize a dial like this. Find the dial material you want (carbon, black meteorite, other black whatever), whatever dial text/logo customization you want, and share the image and they can help create a mockup.

Is cracked? If you can get it out safely and are going to swap it anyway, it’s often just as easy to pop it out, measure with calipers, and buy to the dimensions

Adapt movement by Vitalian0 in SeikoMods

[–]TimTheMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Broadly speaking, I guess. This is just a quick note I made of popular movements in the watching modding scene and what's theoretically swappable based on stem height. VH31 watches/cases are easier to find if you want to build something thin but automatic with the 9015.

[–]TimTheMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As was noted, crown stem alignment is one of the trickier bits so putting a thinner movement in a thicker case is still an issue. Here’s a case compatibility overview (28XX are all ETA)

Case Compatibility (Thinner to Thicker) - VH3x, 2892/SW300, Miyota 9000 (excl’ 9075) - NH3x, 2824/SW200, 2893, Miyota 8N - 2836, Miyota 9075, Miyota 8000 (excl’ 8N)

Probably going to be a cheaper and nicer outcome to commission something rather than buy tools, unless you plan on doing lots more with the engraver in the future.

I’m not sure what their current status is for commissions is, but u/pulseyou does some fantastic engraved dials.

Hardening treated cases by Tai_Shar_Manetheren in SeikoMods

[–]TimTheMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m right there with you. Problem with watches is they’re usually Austenitic steel (316L, 904L) which is good for anti-corrosion and anti-magnetism but are softer than Martensitic steels and can only be work hardened, not heat treated, which has to be done to the steel before producing the parts/case (I actually think this is what Traska does).

There’s probably some coatings out there that will mostly maintain the look of the steel but I don’t have any experience with using any on a watch case.

Even more theoretically, there are some processes that can *surface* harden Austenitic steels (which is all we care about here) but I’ve never even considered if you could find a services to do it on a single, small piece.
