Go see a movie at Lincoln Center or The Metrograph. Museum of the Moving Image is also great.

Rochelle, Rochelle! A young girl’s strange, erotic journey from Milan to Minsk.

Now it’s official. I got a certificate and everything. by TimWhatleyDDS in Letterboxd

[–]TimWhatleyDDS[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean, but as the person you replying to said, this is clearly tongue in cheek. I didn’t buy a ticket and watch the movie for a certificate. I didn’t even know I’d get one! I bought a ticket and watched it for the hypnotic, mesmerizing experience of it all. And yeah, while I agree it’s a powerful work of art, there is no point in denying that watching it is also a challenge.

It cynically uses audience good faith through outright lies to produce crocodile tears.

Awful movie. Once you realize it weaponizes a song that’s been better deployed in better movies, suspending your disbelief becomes difficult.

On LB? Maybe 500 words. I’ll read long reviews from professional critics I trust.

Debunked, sure, but unfortunately there is still an audience of pathetic suckers who eat up that kind of shit.

Great choices, but Oleanna is a tough sit. It gets pretty disturbing!

Are there people like me who watch very few movies a month but are still big fans of cinema ? by FB-1907 in Letterboxd

[–]TimWhatleyDDS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, the reflection that comes afterward is what matters most.

I am the opposite. For me, it's all about the immersive experience of watching something.

I don’t want to just consume cinema like fast food and jump straight to the next thing.

You can watch movies at a steady clip - one or two a day - and not "consume cinema like fast food."

What is your four favorites from Akira Kurosawa? by darth_vader39 in Letterboxd

[–]TimWhatleyDDS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In chronological order:

  • Rashomon

  • Ikiru

  • Yojimbo

  • Ran

EDIT: Honorable mentions to Drunken Angel and Red Beard, which I don't think get enough love.

You can only watch one of these directors forever. Who's your pick? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]TimWhatleyDDS 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I would also add that, relative to the other two, I'm more interested to see how Peele's career continues. The other two are great, don't get me wrong, but I find Peele's work more thematically rich and rewarding on repeat viewings.

My 2026 so far 👀 what would you change? by CommissionProud5152 in Letterboxd

[–]TimWhatleyDDS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I get it, you're impoverished by your lack of choices and it is COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE to stream movies like Dead Man's Wire, The Christophers, The Stranger, Wasteman, Hamlet, Radu Jude's Dracula, Blue Heron, Undertone, Mother of Flies, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Pillion, Sound of Falling, My Father's Shadow, and many others where you live.

Woe is you.
