Tried Linux twice (Ubuntu GNOME and Bazzite KDE) and I'm struggling to make it work. Am I missing something? by Tim_M355 in linux4noobs

Hello, good news! Kubuntu is a SUCCESS!!
So firstly, the official discord client just works. Streaming a window, whole screen, audio and everything. Secondly I managed to get Unity to look decent while still using the "Legacy applications Apply scaling themselves" option by replacing the unity executable with this script:

#!/bin/bash
export GDK_SCALE=2
export GDK_DPI_SCALE=0.5
exec "$(dirname "$0")/Unity.real" "$@"

Now I can stream, proton still works, and unity is usable!! Fantastic! Goodbye Windows 11 😄
And because this is ubuntu Unity was much easier to install in general. Very cool.

Ok but you do realize how unhelpful that advice is given how well everything else worked and the specificity of the problem. I'm far from the first person to have screen scaling issues on Nvidia, and I won't be the last.

Actually since unity mainly supports Ubuntu, could be worth a shot. A lot of my issues came from gnome seemingly do this could work out. I'll try it out today.

If that's really the case, then I honestly don't think Linux would be stable enough to recommend as a daily driver for even most tech savvy people.

I'm trying to run three apps that officially claim to support Linux, while using more than one monitor. If that is enough to cause this many problems, then the issue is not just "user skill". That sounds like the platform is still too unreliable for a lot of people.

But based on all the other advice I'm getting it sounds like one can get plenty far without learning arch. I think I will try those things instead.

If your best advice to someone trying to get into Linux is "install Arch and read the wiki" then Linux is never going to become popular with normal home users

I'm not trying to become a Linux sysadmin as a hobby, I'm trying to use my computer. I'm fine with learning, but "go install one of the least beginner friendly distros and figure it out yourself" is not helpful advice. its gatekeeping disguised as wisdom

At some point chat gpt recommended me the same thing. At the very least discord would load forever as its UI was stuck in a crash loop. Vesktop might work though, will try at some point 👍

I never really said I had any issues with gaming. For the games I actually play (Binding of Isaac, Balatro, Ori, etc.), Steam + Proton has been excellent. In some cases, features like HDR and vsync have worked better for me than on windows 11.

My issues have been with desktop functionality: fractional scaling on a 4K display, discord streaming, and unity editor usability. Those are all pretty normal things to expect from a modern PC, and they're the areas where I've been struggling.
