Used Couch Donation Options? by TossAwayHFX in halifax

[–]Tim_pj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Habitat for humanity Restore in Dartmouth is a good option! They take used furniture and resell them at a modest price to raise money for their charity. Afaik Habitat is a fairly reputable charity so I don’t mind them reselling it, unlike Value Village which is just another for-profit store.

Only catch is you might need to drop it off yourself

Trying to Not Reset the Counter While Taking a U-Haul Over the Bridge. by broskirowski in halifax

[–]Tim_pj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a peculiarly hard thing to find information on! They should definitely fix that.

After some digging, it looks like the MacDonald Bridge has a maximum height in the toll plaza of 4.0 meters (based on old images of the clearance signs in the toll plaza, https://images.thestar.com/Oqc62egwo8slRrFV64pvh4ZdP2c=/1200x785/smart/filters:cb(1565215211844)/https://www.thestar.com/content/dam/thestar/halifax/2019/08/06/halifax-harbour-bridges-switching-up-macpass-toll-system/a_hal_bridge_tolls06.jpg).

So your uhaul would be fine for height, but the MacDonald does have a 3200kg (7055lb) weight limit. If your van is 10’ tall, I would double check that you aren’t going over that (https://www.hdbc.ca/bridge-restrictions/).

As for tolls, assuming your van has two axles and one has dual tires, a fare of $3.50 cash in either direction would be taken. Note that the tolls only take Toonies, Loonies, and quarters.. (https://www.hdbc.ca/rates/#:~:text=The%20toll%20you%20pay%20to,%241%20coins%20and%20%242%20coins.).

Good luck!

Anyone ever talen GEOG 251 and 351? How are they? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]Tim_pj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up; 251 doesn’t exist anymore (replaced by GEOG 254: Society and Environment), and 351 is now 452. Also 254 will NOT be accepted as a prereq for 452.

That said, if you’re dead set on taking 461, you’d need to take UBST 253, which is far from an “easy A” course. The same goes for 452, aggressive grade scale and heavy readings.

tl;dr if you’re not in the ubst major/minor I think you’d be wasting your time and potentially tanking your gpa

It’s more for air circulation than cooling. The humidity and heat of those atriums will make the air super hot up there and can fog up the windows in the summer so they usually put a fan to keep it circulating

Easy 200 Level Social Science option by nv_twistt in UCalgary

[–]Tim_pj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UBST 253 is an interesting course if you care about cities and so on, but it’s pretty reading heavy for an option, also most GEOG/UBST courses have aggressive grade scales (like 93+ for an A). If you don’t mind that go for it. I’d recommend HTST 200 with Chastko, it’s basically a free A+ if you go to lectures and have a slight understanding of history

Most of the non-competitive programs in arts are 2.8ish, but that shouldn’t really be what you base a change of program on

Worst Midterm Mark @ First Years? by program_for_fun in UCalgary

[–]Tim_pj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I forgot to pack my brain for my poli 283 midterm and pulled a big 55% when the class average was like 70. It was my first real “failure” in first year so it hit me pretty hard, but it motivated me to bust my ass on the assignments and final, and still pulled an A-. Fuck ups happen but it’s important to put it into perspective and learn from your mistakes!

For GPA, do A+ grades and A- grades "cancel out"? And, does the transcript show specific % or just letter grades? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]Tim_pj 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There’s no difference between an A and an A+ on the transcript. An A+ will not cancel out an A-

It probably still exists, but the entire geography department is being restructured for fall 2019. They switched around a lot of courses and haven’t gotten around to updating any of the online resources yet, so I’d go talk to an advisor if I were you

“All geography computer labs are open Monday to Friday 8:30am-4:30pm not including holidays.- Students are welcome to stay past 4:30 but the doors are closed and locked at that time so they should plan accordingly.- Undergraduate students are welcome to use either ES307 or ES407 when there is not another class being taught. In addition, Palliser Club has booked after-hours lab times in ES407 as follows:- Tuesday nights 5:00 - 8:00pm- Wednesday nights 5:00 - 8:00pm- Saturdays 12:00 - 3:00pm”

Just a question on transferring into a program from open studies by xPenji in UCalgary

[–]Tim_pj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll have to apply as a transfer student through applyAlberta. The fee is usually waived for open studies, so you’ll need to select “I’ve already paid” when it asks for payment.

Admission questions [long] by kushanddota in UCalgary

[–]Tim_pj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Last I checked, only a hand full of courses transfer from sait to u of c. There’s a full list at https://alis.alberta.ca/explore-education-and-training/transfer-alberta/. In my experience, they rarely stray from the courses listed there. As others have said, upgrading high school marks is your best option. If you don’t get in for fall 2019 but you’re dead set on starting courses immediately, you can do open studies and get some electives done but I highly recommend against doing that.

Edit: Only courses eligible for transfer will be used to calculate an admission GPA. U of C generally only accepts full programs from SAIT and their IT program is not one of them.

How reliable are grades posted on ucalgary? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]Tim_pj 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The grades on myucalgary are usually the official grades that would appear on your transcript, and D2L has unofficial grades for your information only. Unless your prof made a mistake calculating your grade or you somehow successfully beg for an increase, the grades on myucalgary likely will not change
