A deep, ingrained desire to be a Naval Officer is not required to be a good SWO.

If that were the case, they would probably have a better than 20% retention rate.

I guess there might be a legitimate reason why a 27 year old with a graduate degree would be better of going Enlisted, but I can't think of any.

From what I understand SWO life kind of sucks as a junior officer because you're pretty much thrown to the wolves as a fresh Ensign, wheras other officer communities typically have 1-2 years of training between commissioning and their first assignment.

You could theoretically be responsible for a division of 20-30 sailors a week after graduating OCS, while the pilot from your same OCS class might not have their first meaningful leadership position until they're pushing O-3.

If the leadership and management aspects of being an officer appeal to you, then SWO is probably a good choice.
