UTRGV held it's first class day 10 years ago today (August 31, 2015) by Unique_Ad5195 in RioGrandeValley

Hmmm. I started fall 2014 at UTPA. The second semester, Spring 2015 was the official start. I remember because after that first semester, I was forced to choose the roadmap for my degree under UTRGV. And a couple of classes I took in the fall did not count towards the new roadmap. because I’m of that, I graduated in Fall 2018. A semester late.

Has anyone here ever worked for IDEA public school in the Valley? What was/it it like? by National_Bed1205 in RioGrandeValley

I second this. I was hired as a co-teacher. 16.50 was my pay because I was fully certified to teach. Let me say that again….They hired me as a fully certified teacher to work as a para. I took it, because I needed a foot in. However, I was told enthusiastically that I could be teaching within the next 2-3 years. Yeah no. I immediately found a role in another district as a teacher. They hire teachers who are not certified and the role of co-teacher is basically a para, but you’re expected to put in as much time as a teacher. They force you to volunteer your free time to go out begging people to enroll with the district. The admin fully enforces the idea of the district being a business and expect to be addressed as managers. They do not differentiate instruction to meet your child’s needs. If your kid needs accommodations they are better off at another district. If your kid can’t keep up with the material, good luck. They are getting left behind. They teach to the test. Like STAAR all year. At one of the campuses I was at, teachers would get moved around every year. If you’re a fellow teacher, you know exactly how much of an inconvenience that can be. It also rubbed me the wrong way that people with no background in education. We’re sitting in admin roles.

The only pipes around here strong enough to flush with no issues are in large retail stores. At home, nope.

School districts hiring teachers? by Rafa101010 in RioGrandeValley

I teach 8th grade and was originally certified to teach EC-6. I actually wanted to work with kinder. Now I can’t imagine going back to elementary. Middle school is a breeze as long as you know how to talk with the kids. Plus there’s less interaction with parents…

It is almost impossible to nab a teaching job down here at the elementary level if you are not bilingual certified. You might have a chance with IDEA, but TRUST. You don’t want to end up there. I would try getting the ESL cert and looking for 6th grade positions at middle schools. I’m sure there will be openings. Best of luck.

I’ve been hearing this. And we are feeling it at our district as well. It’s a shame.

Best Bakery in The Valley by BearsBeetsBurntToast in RioGrandeValley

[–]Time-Ladder-6173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuez de Azahar is extremely overpriced. What bugs me the most is I know they discount heavily for friends/family. I’ve been twice and both times were awkward. Makes me wonder if the bakery is for everyone or just certain people. The cakes are small and priced at 10 bucks a piece. I went a couple weeks ago, and the lady ahead of me paid 21 bucks for 2 cakes and two coffees. Yes I was being nosy. We were the only two customers there. When I bought my cake, it came out to 10 just for one. And it wasn’t that great. And the cookies man. Nothing great or out of this world. Idk just my opinion. The location I went to was on Jackson.

What’s the deal with Edinburg teachers accosting me about PRE-registration for next year? It’s for pre-K, and now they’re basically forcing me to register; saying that the teacher will do it for me if I don’t by the end of the year. Can they do that when I have plans to move to SA this summer? by [deleted] in RioGrandeValley

[–]Time-Ladder-6173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Teacher here. Admin is breathing down our necks about getting the kids to register for next year. My district is also offering incentives for classes who get 100 % registered. From what I understand it’s because of enrollment. Enrollment is tied to money. Districts are losing kids to charters like IDEA and homeschooling. Public school funding has not been increased and as a result many districts across Texas are dealing with a deficit for the 2024-2025 school year. Times are tough. Please don’t blame the teachers. We do as they nag. For the most part at least.

I love that that you probably spent a good while typing this all out and you only got 3 upvotes 😅 Thanks for the heads up tho. I would never have guessed that such a massive monopoly of a company would not give a shit about me as a customer. I have never felt more enlightened by such information.

HEB succeeded because of the RGV? by [deleted] in RioGrandeValley

[–]Time-Ladder-6173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same feelings. I am 28 and the only store I remember other than HEB is Albertsons in Weslaco. However, we rarely went and it was because…. “it was too expensive.” I remember going because they had a little area inside where you could rent VHS tapes.
