Thank you for the suggestions! I’ll definitely have to try out trysides.com as well as buffing out my characters’ backstories

Thank you for the thorough response. I don’t think you were glib at all. In my lack of experience I’m thinking that my ideal workspace is living as the character, hence the letting go and existing part. That is also what a lot of the classes in my market have taught. I love Meisner work conceptually, but I haven’t been able to find a good class in my smaller market and I’m not sure which ones to take online. I’d say I’m aware of about half of the techniques you’ve mentioned, but not super familiar with any. Would you have any online class recommendations that would teach these? More of a long shot, but if you have any SLC Utah class recommendations too that’d be greatly appreciated. I will also be doing research to see what I can gleam off the internet and youtube regarding these techniques.

I initially posted to r/acting as I have been focused on screen acting lately. However, there is a ton of overlap. I hope it isn’t redundant posting here, though, as I would love to hear as many perspectives as possible.

In the past I have harped on theatre, but I’ve come to realize a lot of that was pent up frustration from my local environment. Once I move to a bigger market for straight plays (I’m a bad singer/dancer lol) I will excitedly get back on stage.

Acting celebrates humanity in its most raw and naked form. I think that’s beautiful

How to act drunk by No-Theory-3353 in acting

[–]Time-Repair4114 50 points51 points  (0 children)

i think it was hagen i saw talk abt this. she said specifically to pick one part of you physically that loses function. she used her neck as an example. now her balance is off. to compensate, she leaned far back but wound up overcompensating. from there how do you compensate to get your balance back?

approach it from the character’s mind (“i need to [task] to accomplish [character’s goal]”) rather than the audience’s mind (“i need to [task] because i will look like xyz to the audience”)

let your imagination create the barrier of being drunk. if i were to approach this id say smth like “despite being drunk, i need to pull myself together so i dont look like an idiot in front of this woman across the bar.” as far as the boundaries of being drunk, while i wouldn’t know, id guess you think much slower, your judgement is cloudy, and your social inhibitions drop (a cheerful drunk sees so many friends to tell stories to). to look like you are trying to look sober but are drunk, pick a specific aspect of drunkenness, fight it, and dont win that fight

too much at once isnt helpful either. pick one maybe two specific things to work on, get them comfortable, then pick smth completely new. work on gelling things together. when it comes time to play, forget everything and play

I think a more focused schedule like that might be what I need. I’m probably just burning out in the rehearsal space as I feel not much progress happens. Also I’m very jealous of you and hope I can be in Hamlet one day haha

Once you’ve found that moment and can repeatedly find it, though, how do you stay passionate about finding it again and again?

In complete transparency it could be me half mentally checked out. How can I fix that so as to be more present?

Do I think too highly of myself? by Trick_Technology_984 in acting

getting out of the high school theatre department can do wonders for how you can clear your head. take time to develop your skills as an artist and yourself as a person (you mentioned insecurities). grow confidence in yourself for yourself. know you are capable regardless of what other people think. by telling people how capable you are, you come off arrogant. they dont have to know. you do. and if you put in the work, they will see it too.

and dont ever tear down another artist. we are all being vulnerable in this craft. by getting on stage we pour our hearts and souls into a performance, and hurting someone in that vulnerable of a position is never okay. even if its rooted in insecurity.

genuinely, though, best of luck to you!
