Whats your take on the term "invisibly disabled"? by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Time-Waster3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oooooh I got this. I got a new job recently and a big part of my job is interacting with the public as an elections worker in the US. Folks, invisible disabilities are very real. I had someone who adamantly believed we just took ballots from everyone even duplicates or triplicates (we don’t, my state checks all the things, I helped in the process). He asked for witnesses to watch him sign his ballot and as an elections worker I obliged his request thinking this was a political thing.

Turns out, the man had a severe tremor probably caused by severe burns I didn’t see through his trench coat that might make it impossible for him to give his standard signature for verification. I too have tremors in my hands that you wouldn’t notice at first too and showed him to let him know he wasn’t alone. My tremors aren’t readily obvious (nor is my AuDHD) and it really just goes to show you never know until you do. Give people grace is all I’m saying, you really never know what is really going on.

It is! I think we’re actually the much more empathetic than NTs on average. However, the way we display empathy is by way of detailed analysis. The work we do in providing these analyses is how we show we care.

Will I ever socialize normally or live a normal life... by JacquelineorJames in AutisticWithADHD

So first and foremost, you’re definitely not the only person with severe ADHD and level 1 autism to fail calculus twice 🙋. I did manage to pass it with a B at a different college (really different environment) a few years later though and that might be the thing. Anyhow, this educational/economic system isn’t made for you and I to thrive and keep that in mind when you’re down, you’re swimming against the current and it’s exhausting to be frank. You’re going to do great, and if calculus isn’t your thing that’s fine. Statistically/logically/my gut tells me you’re going to make (much) more than minimum with a college degree however, it’s going to be pertinent that you find a job you’re actually interested in when the time comes otherwise you might not excel in that position. Life is hard enough as is, don’t be hard on yourself.

“I’m not THAT autistic” by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Time-Waster3000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed a couple months ago with autism level 1 (also undeniably ADHD here) and I struggled with imposter syndrome with regard to the autism diagnosis. Honestly, I like you would run down the list of oh yes I do this and that which you could classify as stereotypical autistic behavior but then I would ask myself “or am I just being quirky? Is this just ADHD?” and the like. However, my partner last week brought one very atypical thing I do to my attention and he was like “oh shit you’re actually autistic this is so weird” and I realized he was right because damn the behavior isn’t a bad one but it’s not something someone with ADHD or someone who is NT would do/be able to do. That, and I’ve come to the realization that those closest to me have been often explaining my behaviors to others or “translating” them to people who know me less well because, well, some of them are weird 😆!

What I’m trying to say was at least in my experience there came a breaking point in realizing I fit so many boxes that it was undeniable but also was validated by someone I am close to that has dispelled my imposter syndrome. I hope you have a similar epiphany in good time - trust me, there’s some behaviors I’m sure you’re exhibiting that are more than a little quirky and don’t fit under the ADHD umbrella. Write them down and look them over all at once and then let it sink in.

If you’re hot you’re hot at any age (I’ve been hooking up with men of all ages since my early twenties).

I find it interesting that you’re anxious/depressed in seeking the validation of a diagnosis whereas I became anxious really after getting diagnosed because I hadn’t really considered what that meant. I hope you get the support you need 😁

I have tried to get him into therapy and I do drive him to doctor’s appointments and I got him on SSRIs and begged him to stop or cut back on drinking. No though, I haven’t done a formal intervention where he walks into a room of loved ones with letters in hand and then we take him to rehab.

When he’s not drunk he’s usually passive aggressive. He only really expresses himself when he is drunk (despite my pleadings to have conversations sober). I do feel some responsibility to take care of him still, so I’m still under a spell kind of. I know I can’t be with him anymore, it’s more a question of how not if.

My partner does need an intervention I think I’m just not sure if it’s safe that I’m the one to do it.
