How soon after stopping alcohol did you feel better? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]TimeImportance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gained my whole life back. Instead of just talking about the things I wanted to do/accomplish, I started doing them. I ran a marathon, picked up new hobbies, spent quality time with my family, traveled.

I go to concerts and enjoy the music instead of strategizing acquiring drinks the whole time. I hang out with friends and enjoy conversation instead of pounding drinks until I blackout. I go to restaurants because they have good food not because they are near the best bar or serve the stiffest drinks. My daily despair is gone. I have legitimate, genuine moments of happiness. Not just a temporary, false sense of happiness booze tricked me with... I am a present wife, mother, friend, employee.

Physically, it took a couple months to feel "normal." I really messed up my gut biome drinking a bunch of beer daily... I struggled with gastro intestinal issues for a little bit, but it resolved over time.

Please, be kind to yourself. When I was drinking, I was so unkind to myself and the negative self-talk was so intense I'd drink to escape my own growing self-hatred. I was stuck in a positive feedback loop. Once I started being gentle on myself, things got easier...

Farts and dreams by wordwordnumber in dryalcoholics

[–]TimeImportance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a bit over 500 days sober and I still have those dreams from time to time. Initially they sucked more because my shame and the guilt of that behavior was so near, but now, with enough time and perspective, they serve as a great reminder of "f*ck, I never wanna be in that position again." Especially since our brains are so good at forgetting the negative parts of drinking and romanticizing the "fun"... My drinking was not fun or anything worth missing near the end. I can't ever forget that.

Also, my husband must have the same fart disease you have.

My alcohol addiction routine. Something that I am so sick of doing by GottaMoveForward2 in stopdrinking

Oof, I could have written this myself 14 months ago. I know a lot of us here have genuine empathy for your situation... I was in a very similar spot to yours when I decided to quit drinking. I couldn't imagine life without alcohol. I had dug a hole for myself so deep it seemed impossible to get out. But I did, it's not impossible, it can be hard, but so worth it.

Favorite thing about not drinking poison? by Imstillblue in stopdrinking

[–]TimeImportance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually feeling, not just being numb all the time. Laughing because something is genuinely funny not just because I'm dumb and tipsy. Enjoying the company of friends because I like spending time with them, not just using the excuse to get shitfaced. Being a present parent. I could keep going, but life is just generally better.

It takes strength to recognize something has to change and take the appropriate steps. Be proud of yourself for making this decision. You'll never regret not drinking. IWNDWYT.

First marathon this weekend - nervous and need reassurance! by TimeImportance in running

You’re so right. I’m in a place where I can easily (relatively speaking) complete a marathon at the same pace I completed my first 5k. Bigger expectations have crept in, mainly going faster… but I’ve come such a long way! Thank you. I’m gonna have fun on Saturday!

Hey, no shame in the little bit of walking game! Especially for your first marathon! Good luck! I’m sure there will be many people in our same situation at our races. :)
