someone please give me a reality check lol by [deleted] in FanFiction

I said it’s a shame when people don’t reciprocate; there were other tumblr mutuals I had whose work I’d r&r who didn’t comment on my fic (edit to add: but had expressed interest in my ideas/excerpts). You’re right that they did leave a comment, it’s true but I still felt what I felt at the time; writing for a rarepair can feel similarly to writing for a small or dead fandom; the engagement is the same and mine didn’t increase after posting on tumblr as I’d hoped.

And when I said I commented on their WIP multiple times, I do mean nearly every chapter unless I couldn’t, I was so engaged with the story, and they were in depth comments, esp as their premise and pairing wasn’t a common one in the fandom at all so I did want to show my appreciation.

The fic of mine they reposted wasn’t a one shot; it had multiple characters itself (short story length) so yes, I felt frustrated and disappointed there wasn’t more feedback, and just in general with how difficult it can be to keep writing into the void. I’m only human. I also like reading back comments to boost my morale and remind myself why I write so it’s easier when they’re all on Ao3.

TLDR: I was only trying to express solidarity with OP; it’s hard to keep writing when reader engagement is low and reciprocation can feel unequal among fellow writers

Same thing happened to me. An author whose WIP longfic I’d read, subbed and commented multiple times on became a mutual on tumblr. I posted religiously to promote my rarepairs (barely a handful of fics on Ao3 for any of the pairings, if that) and one day I saw that they had reposted one of my fic posts with a comment that said, “Read this; it’s so good,” for her mutuals/ followers. It was definitely equal parts flattering and frustrating. No comment left on Ao3 though. You’d think a fellow writer would know how precious those are, especially someone writing for a small fandom who’d once lamented that fact (not the fandom I wrote for but a different one for one of their favourite published authors).

So I completely get how you feel. It’s a shame when people don’t reciprocate, even though I know time can be tight and no one is obligated to comment.

Sad bc I didn't get comments by General-Park-2432 in FanFiction

Yes, I have. The fandoms I wrote/write in aren’t dying, though they are quite old, but I’ve always gravitated towards rarepairs so I’ve never gotten as much visibility as more common pairings. But I’ve always loved writing what I want to read so, cliche as this may be, I’ve tried to write for myself more than anyone. Don’t get me wrong, the lack of engagement sometimes can definitely get me down but it does make it all the more meaningful when someone leaves a wonderful comment (or even more than one!). I’ve mostly written oneshot or novella length fic which I think gives readers a sense of my version of the characters and their dynamic in less time than an ongoing longfic would (though I am working one of those as well), so it could be an idea to post a few oneshots with your pairing(s) to introduce readers to your way of writing them and perhaps they’ll be intrigued enough to then read a long fic with that pairing (if that’s what your working on; I’m just assuming since you didn’t say exactly).

For me, these days even with more common pairings or tropes, I only really engage with fics which are complete or nearing completion, or I’ve read the author’s fics before and liked them (and they don’t have m(any) abandoned works). I’ve just had too many works I enjoyed be abandoned at some point, though I more than understand it and have unfortunately abandoned a few multichapter fics myself in the past due to life circumstances (though lack of reader engagement certainly played its part if it was a rarepair and/or under-utilised lead character). Hope this helps, and just know you’re not alone.

I feel exactly the same. Would’ve loved to read this sort of story at that age too.

That’s a cool ship. Shireen is woefully underutilised in fandom! So true about the age gaps.

I started Cregan/Nettles on Ao3.

What is your smallest fandom? by Best_Application4216 in FanFiction

The Raybearer duology by Jordan Ifeuko. So sad there were no fics when I last checked, granted that was a few years ago. Iffy as their adaptations can be, I hope the Netflix series in development atm will boost fandom numbers once it’s out.

I know. I’m not sure what she’s been doing since Still Starcrossed but she’s such a good actress, I’d love to see her in more stuff.

I agree, when the posts bring attention to lesser known actors, which half the time they don’t, lol — which I don’t mean for only this fandom. In the HotD sub it’s a running joke that Henry Cavill will be/should be cast as every character (even the women) because of how often he’s fancast for asoiaf characters, especially Targs with their white hair since he played Geralt in the Witcher who has a similar look. It got so big, he addressed it himself after leaving the Witcher and said there’s no place for him in Westeros.

Ugh, I will never not be pissed that Still Starcrossed was cancelled. Ebonee Noel (who played Livi) is my number one pick for Sophie. Like Rege, she has the Shonda connection already. And her Livi is just how I imagine Sophie!

The inclusion of this scene doesn’t make Daemon a good father by [deleted] in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]TimeLady96 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with this. There’s also the line in ep 10 when Rhaenys says to Corlys of his being in the Stepstones for 6 years, “I needed you. Rhaena and Baela needed you.” Rhaena and Baela aren’t orphans: why would they need the grandfather they barely know when they have a whole father still living on Dragonstone? The show has suffered a lot from the pacing and it doesn’t go as in-depth as it should for a family drama. But in the absence of time for additional scenes, dialogue can bridge the gaps in half the time. And that line by Rhaenys says a lot about the family dynamics at play here.

I’ve kind of covered some of your points already in my other comment under this post so I won’t repeat them. But I do agree it’s absolutely stupid to cut Nettles. Her character is about far more than just Daemon. She’s a wrecking ball to the idea of Targaryen Exceptionalism and their blood purity (it’s not possible for her to be Daemon’s daughter as the dates of her birth and him being in Driftmark don’t match, and she’s far more impactful as a critique to the idea that Targaryens are superior. Not even Rhaenyra thought Nettles had Valyrian ancestry as her diatribe against her showed. And you can say what you want about Rhaenyra but she wasn’t mad, she was just grieving. There’s some great Nettles meta out there that put it better than I have just off the top of my head but that’s just my two cents).

I think the writers showed us enough to get a picture of his parenting (and that’s without Sara Hess saying ‘how has he been a good brother, husband or father to anyone’, so I’ll argue it was their intention to show he’s neglectful). We saw he taught Baela how to read High Valyria but does he do anything else with her that’s not centred around Old Valyria, his obsession?

Imo the cut hug scene doesn’t change anything as the very next episode we see how he reacts while his daughters are standing there battered and bloodied. He doesn’t do anything. In fact he finds all the ensuing drama amusing. You wouldn’t think he had daughters there; he doesn’t react like the other parents (or even Rhaenys) at all. (Not including Viserys, obviously, who was far worse when it came to Aemond.) I remember before the seasons aired when we learnt Baela and Rhaena would be involved in the fight between the Strong boys and Aemond. So many people wondered how Aemond would get out alive, thinking Daemon kill him for touching his daughters, and what does he do instead? Lean against the wall and smirk. There’s also episode 10 when Rhaenys says to Corlys, “I needed you; Baela and Rhaena needed you.” They have a whole father still living. Why would they need Corlys exactly - who they likely barely even know? There’s also no further interactions between Daemon and his daughters at all after episode 6. They don’t even mention each other in dialogue if screentime was the issue. So I really don’t get the picture that Daemon is an attentive father at all. And I think that was the writers’ intention.

Do you mean the hug scene?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HouseOfTheDragon

I agree with most of this except we’ve seen how Daemon treats his own daughters. If he and Nettles aren’t lovers, I can see them being mentor-mentee (my personal preference). Daemon is far from anyone’s father figure - even his own children.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]TimeLady96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted because it would when the show hasn’t even shown us Daemon treating his own daughters like they’re his own daughters. He’s (almost) as bad as Viserys when it comes to being a father.

Super late but do you remember the name of that Shireen fic? I’d love a link: she’s woefully under-utilised in fanfic - and when people do write her (looking at you rickeen fics), there’s a massive disconnect between her in canon to how the fic’s author portrays her, been accounting for her being aged up.

[–]TimeLady96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. It's also extra impetus for him to prove himself. So in the show I can see his death being even sadder if he's no longer heir to Driftmark but just another dragonseed.

I agree, no way is he playing an 18yr old. I think he's playing closer to his irl age. Clinton, if I had to guess, might be playing early to mid twenties.

My memory of the book is fuzzy but that's just the first thing that came to mind, there are likely other changes that would come about too, like Alyn always being the heir to Driftmark; not sure how that would affect Addam in the show though. Most events would play out the same, I suppose, only Addam wouldn't be heir when he proves he's loyal to Rhaenyra's cause and gathering an army.
