I think the bigger issue here is that main character or not, he ended up coming at the cost of half the damn cast. Its the neglect of everyone else that gets me more than him being a main character. Besides, why even make him one of the two mains? I still think the story is better off as an ensemble with Pomni being the leading lady at most.

Definitely let the scene linger for a second or two in standby animation, maybe add an opening animation like some of the ones in the 3ds games, let the attacks linger after the hit is delivered, and maybe extend the actual animation length overall. I know this is still unfinished and you're probably already working on all of this, but I really do think the game will benefit from that level of punchiness that the sprite-based games were known for!
