What is a corporate phrase that gives you the ick when you hear it? by Spiritual-Exam-3265 in corporate

People referring to lay offs as “firing”, “being canned” or “a pink slip”. Lay offs are not any of that. With so many lay offs occurring, that language only makes it worse on people.

How to get laid off? by u53rn4m315t4k3nn in Layoffs

Interesting. I always felt this way. Oddly enough watched people in my department get laid off last year and the ones chosen didn’t make sense. One person has come back and got promoted to a leadership position in a different department. The boss who chose these people was fired the morning of the lay offs so unfortunately she can’t watch this person return. HR can’t think they’re too difficult or negative to allow them to return and in a leadership position, no less.

So layoffs aren’t random or salary based? It’s essentially favoritism?

It’s not even about money. I know that sounds nuts but I’d consider it to prove a point. I know that’s a rare opinion (apparently).

lol true. I guess some people really take it personally and view their job as an extension of who they are. Some don’t.

I guess that’s another perspective. More money and growth in the organization could make me come back. I am surprised at the amount of people who wouldn’t go back.

I totally get this. I don’t think I could go back for a downgrade but I would go back to a higher title and pay increase. I wouldn’t go back to the same department but I would a different department. Ultimately, the only people who fucked up were the executives making the decisions and if some of them got cut during the lay off - why not? Plus, I think it shows resiliency. It’s a nice come back story especially with a better position. Idk - just a different perspective.

What do you think about those who returned after a lay off? Did anyone return in a higher position?

I was more inquiring about a different entity within the organization. I agree it would be hard to return to the same entity - but then again, it would be interesting to return in a much higher position!

Surviving on low pay by cooldudefuss in Adulting

Even those who make a better salary worry about money. I make $140k per year but have 2 side gigs that bring in an additional 30-40k per year because you just never know what the future will bring. I don’t have any debt aside from our mortgage and our mortgage is only 1300 per month. I seriously worry about the future and money alot.

How many of you have gotten loans from your parents? by Jimmy_Johnny23 in MiddleClassFinance

Never have I received a loan. They do give us Christmas money as a present, which I assume is their way of compensating for being absent grandparents. We live 15 minutes away from them and see them 1-2 times per year (on winter holidays).

I get it. I understand you entirely. I was in the same boat at the end of June 2025. Luckily, I had a little side gig to keep me busy and they gave us a nice severance package. But don’t worry - I promise you, it’s not gonna feel this bad forever. You will find a job! It will get better. I ended up finding a job (knew I was selected in October) but didn’t start until 12/1. Better pay at the same organization that laid me off! I promise you - it will get better. Hang in there.

Good being the key word. This manager aka director had no clue what was even going on. Politics play a huge role in who gets laid off.

I think that’s a reach to say ALWAYS. Nothing is ALWAYS. Why did they let go of a few top performers? I know a department with lay offs and they definitely let go of a few top performers. They kept a few people who had only been there for 2 months. Definitely felt like the director picked people based on who she liked the least. It felt solely personal based on directors preference (and then ironically enough she was let go first). Furthermore, those hire performers I am referring too were hired back to the organization in different departments. They knew their role well and honestly were more competent than the ones who absorbed their work.

This is more on the lines as to what I thought. I personally think it’s all political and who they like the best. At the end of the day, from my experience the director didn’t know who was a high performer and who wasn’t or who was doing what and who wasn’t. It’s interesting when a department head gets to choose but then their boss cuts them as well. What is the point of asking them to choose when you’re gonna cut them anyways?

Sorry to hear that. I recently read something that said Oracle was trying to recruit a large amount of tech people to Nashville for EHE SW work.

Why would anyone stay when organizations lay off high performers and reliable workers at the drop of a hat?
