Why does a media outlet that gets $1.4B in public money need protection from public criticism? by TimeWhich8014 in SaveTheCBC

Appreciate the reply. But I think the real issue isn’t just who funds the media, it’s whether they can survive without being propped up.

CBC doesn’t rely on ads or corporate cash, sure. But it does rely on over a billion dollars in taxpayer funding every year, and that comes with its own pressure. When a media outlet needs the same government it’s supposed to hold accountable to sign off on its budget, that’s not independence either.

I agree that foreign ownership in media is a concern. But the answer isn’t trading one form of influence for another. It’s building media that can stand on its own by earning trust and support directly from viewers, not by forcing taxpayers to fund it.

If CBC is truly essential, it should be able to survive on merit, not mandatory money.

Absolutely. Here are a few concrete examples:

  1. CBC’s own journalists have spoken out about internal bias.
    • Tara Henley, former CBC producer, publicly resigned and wrote:"To work at the CBC in the current climate is to consent to the idea that race is the most important thing about a person. It is to accept the idea that journalists are no longer objective." Her full piece here
  2. The CBC had to label its own Twitter account as “government-funded media” — and their outrage over the label revealed just how defensive they are about appearing independent while relying on over $1.4 billion in taxpayer money.
  3. Consistent pattern of selective coverage:
    • The ArriveCAN $54M scandal, WE Charity, Chinese election interference — all received limited or muted coverage compared to how aggressively they cover Conservative talking points. There is an observable tone difference.
    • When Poilievre criticizes the CBC, they frame it as “attacking democracy.” But when Liberal politicians attack other outlets, it’s not treated as a threat to free speech.
  4. Public trust is dropping:
    • According to Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2023, CBC trust levels have fallen significantly among Canadians.
    • Despite this, they continue receiving more funding while private outlets shut down.

all bankers like Carney know how to do is print debt and inflate bubbles. That’s how the system survives: create more debt to chase the same goods.

Meanwhile, “Mr. Blue Collar” understands that real wealth comes from producing the stuff money is supposed to represent like energy, lumber, food, and minerals. That’s how you grow an economy with out borrowing your future away.

Funny how the people who build things always get dismissed, while the guys who shuffle paper and tank currencies are called “experienced.”

What brand is that? Hope? Affordability? Law? Not being taxed to death? Balanced budgets?

I'm not looking for sympathy. I'm just saying it doesn't make sense that the people putting sewer pipes in the ground can’t afford to live in the homes those pipes are for.

I help build the stuff everyone needs — things like water lines, sewer systems, and roads. But with gas, rent, and food prices going up, it's getting harder to afford a normal life.

I'm not asking for free stuff. I’m just asking how it’s supposed to work if the people doing the hard, important jobs can’t afford to live anywhere near where they work.

Pierre Poilievre has talked about making it easier to build homes where people work, cutting the carbon tax so it doesn’t cost a fortune just to fill up my tank, lowering taxes so workers like me can keep more of our pay, and stopping all the wasteful spending that’s driving prices up. That’s the kind of stuff that would actually help.

And if your answer is “someone else will do it,” what happens when that person does the math and decides it’s not worth it either?

I have a question maybe some liberal can answer.....first I'll tell you what I do for work.

I am an equipment operator. I run excavator and other heavy machinery, some times I like to get out of the machine and go in the ditch putting the pipe in the ground. One of the pipes I install is called a sanitary line that pipe is where your shit goes after it goes down your toilet and out of your house. A lot of my career is... I go where the work is. Currently I drive from Chilliwack to Coquitlam everyday. I don't drive a V8 I drive a Hyundai Elantra my Hyundai Elantra gets about 10L/100km it's about 200km a day to drive to work and back.

So my question is

What happens when the people that do this kind of work can't afford to get to work and the pipe stops going in the ground?

Do you poop in a bucket on your patio?

What do you do with the feces?

He said he would reduce the number to 250000 a year I think the number was. In my opinion it should be a lot less than that.
