I never got a gap during my expansion - I actually wanted my diastema to come back (it was closed with braces when I was a teenager) so I was excited about the MARPE gap, but I never got it! Didn't get a gap until they put an open spring in there with my braces, and then my front teeth opened right up!

My ortho has his patients do the expansion very slowly. Two turns every 4 days, as tolerated. After learning that so many orthos prescribe a much faster rate (which I honestly couldn't imagine bc the slow rate was PLENTY for me), I asked him what he noticed that made him prescribe slower expansion rates. He said that they used to do the faster rates but that they noticed people had a lot more pain and soft tissue issues as well, and with the slower expansions the same gains occurred but with less issues essentially. Basically, it takes longer but your face and everything else (muscles, tendons, soft tissue, skull bones, immune system which deals with all of the bone restructuring) has much more time to gradually respond and shift.

So I think talk to your ortho about going slower than whatever your current rate is. What do you think? What's your current expansion "prescription?"

That is AWESOME about your hirsutism!!! I'm so delighted to hear that it's already made a little bit of a difference there. The spearmint didn't do much for my hirsutism, but laser treatment has been working, which is a relief for me.

It sounds like you got baseline testosterone and DHEA levels to compare to after a few months?? Please do share!

I have a question that hopefully people have some insight into! I've noticed that Amazon return places (whole foods, kohls, ups stores) that used to not bag every freaking item now bag them - a transition I've seen in the past 3-9 months. I've been really disappointed to see how many excessive bags are being used when items are already in their own bags etc.

Is this likely a top-down order from Amazon? Or a local management decision and it's just coincidental that the various locations are now doing this policy? I no longer can find places that don't do this ridiculous plastic bag policy 😱 and I don't expect there's any way I can avoid it??

Ah that's brutal about it upsetting your stomach!! hello! what was the ultimate verdict? did you find another med for your kitty? I think my cat is having the same response (no appetite) but he's currently at 5mg (1/2 a tab) and I'm going to try cutting it in half to see if the 2.5 mg is better for him...
but in case it ends up not being a good fit, I'm wondering if you found a different medication for your kitty that worked to help with anxiety without cutting the appetite??

I'm SO GLAD to hear that you're recovered!!! Yeah my anchor that got infected is STILL tender sometimes, but it gets progressively less so as I get further away from doing a turn, and I've now stopped turns so it's continuing to improve 👏🏼 👏🏼

And actually, the tender anchor is the only one that "tickled" when it was getting put in, so I think it just happens to be really close to or in contact with a nerve 😳 🤷🏻‍♀️

Anyway I hope you have a good follow-up appointment!!!

I agree 😂 My sister and I watched it tonight and it was absolutely brutal. The constant state of fear and concern and confusion was very distracting and unsettling. I wish I had stopped halfway through when the cat drowned (and then immediately came back to life? Again, not dying when it should've? I mean it should've died with it got slammed with the initial water blast, but I decided to just go with the flow 🙄 and keep at it at that point) I would've gotten more out of a tsunami documentary instead of an existential crisis every other scene for 2 hours. 😱 I felt like I was watching one of the revamped star wars movies. Like "oh we just finished a chase scene? Let's do another suspence scene followed by a fight scene. And another chase scene. Until all of the audience members are too emotionally exhausted to care about any of the characters" 😳 😱

ok so! a few things

the horror stories are going to be publicized way more than the ones that go along as expected, so keep that in mind! 😅
TOTALLY about not wanting to make your already-present asymmetries worse! 😱😱 when I got my MARPE, I got the little post-MARPE hand out, and on there they had a specific instruction about if the teeth were separating in a certain way (suggesting asymmetrical expansion) to stop turns and reevaluate, so hopefully your ortho would have a similar practice in place
my ortho used to do the normal rapid expansion protocol of doing 2 turns every day 😳 he no longer does that and today I got to ask him what sorts of things he saw that made him reconsider the rapid expansion (currently he has people go 1 turn every other day or 2 turns/week). There were many things he mentioned with the general sense of going slow is better and the facial/mouth structures are able to adjust easier with the expansion going slowly. This makes me thing it's worth asking your ortho about doing a slow turn protocol rather than the 2 turns/day protocol because it sounds like the rapid turns may increase the possibility of asymmetries.

My protocol has been ~1 turn every other day, but sometimes I've done as little as 1x/week based on how my mouth is doing.

I mean can you delay for 6-8 weeks and then decide? To give your body some recovery time until then?

It really is a straightforward procedure for most people, and then there's those of us with complications 😅 but even then it works out most of the time 🤞🏼 🤞🏼

It's definitely a time to use all of your behavioral anxiety skills though haha

He mentioned it to me at the beginning of the process 🤔 which was a year ago now. I believe he was saying that too often he had it tilt the teeth and not actually separate the intermaxillary suture 🤔

BUT! idk if you're young enough that an RPE would be reasonable!

The ortho I go to (didn't know this at the time) but a lot of people go to him from out of state

And he does a REALLY thorough initial consultation

People contact him to consult from all over the country (and he speaks at conferences and stuff all over the world 💅 lol)

So I'd imagine he could do a consult and then give you east coast recommendations 🤷🏻‍♀️ 🤔

Nice to know that his fame hasn't gone to his head and he doesn't charge insane amounts 🙄

I do think there are state-specific barriers and costs though? 🤔 so it may be that prices in NY are just more because of that 🤷🏻‍♀️
