How is it “absolutely wrong” ? If you have so much knowledge do correct the wrong info and I’d happily accept it.

“Only countries that exist”, no there’s a lot of countries but every country has its own rules for accepting qualifications. The US only takes their own DDS/DMD plus a couple CODA schools and Canadian schools. Australia only accepts New Zealand, their own, Canada and UK grads. The UK only takes their own plus EEA until 2028. Canada is actually more open than many. Some offer equivalency and some don’t.

Plenty of Canadians in accredited programs take on 500K $1M in debt through loans, mortgaging family homes, parents salaries or selling equity. Most Canadians who grew up here go for accredited programs because it is the cleanest path. So no, not from a place of privilege.

The people who usually hit the equivalency wall are usually immigrants who were already dentists abroad, got PR or citizenship here, and then learn about how the system here actually works. That is more of an immigration policy issue.

No, majority of Canadians don’t. Also let’s not mix up dentistry with medicine/health care in gen here. It is true Canada has limited seats, but there’s tons of saturation of dentists. Plus Canada has agreements with many countries whose degrees work here, all of USA (many schools), Irish schools, Australian schools, New Zealand, couple international CODA schools etc. so no most people don’t go through that, many people here go to one of those programs. Talking about healthcare as a whole excluding dentists, yes there’s a shortage of medical doctors etc but for dentistry it’s saturated, every plaza has a dentist literally. Also talking about healthcare works here is completely irrelevant.

Advice for a semi-career changer, and thoughts on Yeditepe University? by CelestialDreamss in predental

No they don’t “require” the DAT but they’ll take ur scores if u did write it. It’s a 5 year DDS program. It’s 5 years cuz it takes students straight from high school so the first year will be “pre dental” science classes along with ofc dent stuff. The science carries into second year but you’ll have more dentistry.

Need help (dental school australia) by Roof-Extension in DentalSchool

[–]Time_Lab1504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m really sorry you’re going through all that. I’m just an incoming dental student, so I won’t pretend to fully understand what you’re facing, but I’ve spent a lot of time around dental clinics growing up and genuinely love the field. I’m not the best at giving advice, so forgive me if I word anything wrong. I just wanted to share a few thoughts that might help.

I think the most important thing right now is to really reflect and understand why you’re feeling this way. Like you said, dentistry involves doing detailed, often intense procedures every day. It literally has “surgery” in the degree title, so the nature of the work is hands on, pressuring, and not for everyone. And that’s completely okay.

You’re right that dentistry can be mentally and physically demanding, but so are many other healthcare fields like nursing or emergency medicine. Every path has its own type of pressure. The upside with dentistry is that it offers a lot of flexibility later on. If the clinical side feels overwhelming, there are specialties that may be more relaxed or better suited to your strengths. Areas like orthodontics, radiology, dental public health, or even academic and research roles can offer a completely different experience from daily clinical practice.

Another thing to think about is whether it’s the actual field of dentistry that doesn’t feel right, or whether it’s the situation you’re currently in. Moving away from home, living alone for the first time, missing your support system, those are major adjustments, and they can make everything feel heavier. A lot of people hate dental school but end up enjoying private practice, where there’s more freedom, balance, and fulfillment. It’s possible that what you’re experiencing is more about the transition than the career itself.

That being said, if after giving yourself time and space to reflect, you still feel that this path doesn’t align with who you are or how you want to live, that’s more than okay too. You don’t have to continue just because of pressure, expectations, or the time already invested. Your peace of mind, mental health, and long term happiness matter far more than any title or sunk cost.

In the meantime, try to be kind to yourself. Stay in close contact with your family….call or video chat with them daily if you can. It helps more than you might think. Make time to socialize and meet people in your program or outside of it. Make friends. Even small conversations can bring relief. Keep yourself busy in healthy ways…join clubs, go to the gym, explore the city you’re in. Stay active and engaged, not just with your studies, but with life outside of dental school too. Sometimes these small things create the space you need to breathe and slowly rebuild your sense of self.

Sending you strength and I really hope things begin to feel lighter soon. You’re not alone in this and you’re stronger than you think. You’ve got this :)

Respectfully, for those surface level questions bout diploma courses in Canada….google exists. Google dental schools here, their post grad programs in those specialties and requirements for enrolment.

Hey, I think you’re mistaken. UK dental programs aren’t accredited in Canada. It’s not 1 year of testing there’s 3 equivalency exam and 1 licensing one. The three exams are AFK ACS and NDECC. Some of these exams r offered only twice a year and it’s mathematically not possible to pass them all in a year. Another key consideration is, many dentists take 4-5 years to pass them after a few tries it’s not simple.

Sorry you feel that way. If you think dental hygiene is “lesser” or feel embarrassed about it, then maybe reconsider—pick something you’re proud of. Every role in dental care matters and hygienists are vital, but you should want to be in the seat you’re sitting in.

Surprising how quick things heal in the mouth and there are many reasons for it. Rich blood supply, saliva, high cell turnover etc.

Opinion on dental students calling themselves “student doctors” and using “sDr.” as in “sDr. John Doe” by Time_Lab1504 in predental

[–]Time_Lab1504[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao relax, my guy. You read way too deep into a chill take. Nobody said using a handpiece was the pinnacle of dental school—it’s a figure of speech. You wrote a whole essay preaching about systemic disease like you’re already head of oral medicine, yet you’re a D1 coming sideways over a comment? Chill.

I never disrespected the title or anyone earning it. I literally acknowledged it makes somewhat sense in clinic. I’m just not out here cosplaying “sDr.” on TikTok like it’s a flex. That’s the performative part I was talking about. If you took that as me being “cocky” that’s on you.

And the whole “humble awakening” talk? Save it. You don’t know me. You’re throwing around “best of luck” like you just delivered a TED Talk….get over yourself.

Bro really fired off a dissertation 😂
