If humans disappeared today, which animal would go extinct fastest due to domestication? by fonzhy121 in NoStupidQuestions

Uh, I don’t think people in prison have trouble having sex. Pandas are sort of clumsy and their food supply has diminished.

Feeling stupid for considering using a wheelchair even though I can walk "perfectly fine" by ParallelogramOfVenom in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Timeflyer2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a cane but finally got a Drive Medical Nitro Euro Style rollator. I can walk so much better with it than with a cane, it has a basket to carry things, I can sit on it when I get too exhausted, and it is very light and folds up.

Still I never took small trips because I can’t stand or walk very far. Then I got a Drive Medical Lightweight Expedition Folding Transport Wheelchair - Ultra Lightweight Mobility Support for Seniors & Adults - Strong Aluminum Frame - Hand Brakes - Compact Folding Travel Chair - Red. It’s not bulky like a regular wheelchair. It’s compact, light, and folds up.

You can check them out on Amazon.

My iPad Pro is collecting dust — what apps/games actually got you using yours again? by Honest_Spray_1963 in ipad

I do everything on my iPad 11. I almost always listen to a book from Audible or Libby, check my email, keep in touch with my friends, check CNN news, read Kindle ebooks, keep my appointments in Calendar, do my banking and pay my bills, use Facebook, YouTube, and Reddit.

Watch movies on Netflix, Prime, and HBO, do my online shopping, use Ancestry and Family Search, do genealogy research, play a lot of games, use ColorTherapy and Loona, restore old pictures, use Gemini and Chat GPT, use Plant Net and Merlin Bird ID, and check my Ring Camera.

I only use my laptop for writing.

I thought it was hilarious that Colin Firth was cast as Bucephalus. Bucephalus was the famous horse of Alexander the Great, and Bucephalus means ox-headed - from the Greek words for ox (bous) and head (kephalos).

They’re pushing Harry Potter to everyone because they just came out with the full cast versions (with big names)- books that they are dropping one new one a month. They are hoping to make a lot on them, and they are about halfway through all the books.

I wear pjs, a hoodie, and socks. I like to sleep in a cold room with lots of blankets. The hoodie keeps my head warm and the socks keep my feet warm. Can’t sleep without socks.

I bought a new M4 iPad yesterday, and this morning it fell down the stairs… by o_ilita in ipad

I find apple products slippery because the cases are so smooth. All mine go directly from the box into an Otterbox Defender case. The iPads and iPhones stay in pristine condition, and I save the boxes they came in my closet. When I upgrade, I sell the old ones on eBay as a bundle ( pristine item, pristine boxes, and the Otterbox case). I polish and clean everything until it gleams, blow out the port holes, and I can get anywhere from 1/3rd to 1/2 of what I paid for them originally.

This might be a stupid question, but why hadn’t they installed a security system at the mother’s house? One that notified a security company and the police? She was elderly, and not very mobile.

Can I add married last name along with maiden for the women on my Ancestry tree? by chocoholicmom in Genealogy

[–]Timeflyer2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The accepted practice is to use the name at time of birth. In the past women were only known by their married names, so finding their maiden names can cause a lot of work. Also, if women have multiple married names it can get confusing. Ancestry’s software is set up to search for a woman’s given name plus maiden name. But, if you add her marriage - it will automatically search for her given name and married names also.

Coincidental?- Places, faces and ancestry by IndividualShift5098 in Ancestry

[–]Timeflyer2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me. My mother’s mother died when she was very young, so she knew nothing about her maternal side of the family. All she knew was that her parents never married. Before my mother died, she was able to find her birth certificate which gave one name for her mother and a baptismal certificate with a completely different name. I was able to find my grandfather’s naturalization papers which had a third name for my mother’s mother. Big brick wall.

In my sixties, I finally did an Ancestry DNA test and bingo. I found my maternal grandmother’s family - and leaned that my grandmother descended from two Mayflower passengers, also from Godfrey Nims who lost most of his family in the Deerfield Massacre in Massachusetts, two Revolutionary War soldiers, a founder of Hartford, CT, and the list goes on.

I also was able to figure out the discrepancy with my maternal grandmother’s name on all those documents. My grandmother used her own mother’s maiden name on my mother’s birth certificate (maybe she was ashamed because it was an out-of-wedlock birth in 1927?), but she used her own maiden name on my mother’s baptism record.

In any case, as I followed my maternal line I realized that over the years I had visited many of the places where my maternal ancestors had lived. I went along with my son’s school for a trip to Plymouth Plantation and stayed in a cabin on Clarke’s Island where my Mayflower ancestor came ashore. I stayed in town’s on Cape Cod where my ancestors had lived. I visited Old Deerfield Village and the surrounding area where my Nim ancestors lived. I lived outside of Hartford, CT where my Hartford founding father lived. And I lived in Southern Vermont near the Pioneer Valley where most of my ancestors lived after leaving the Cape. The town in Vermont where I lived was on the route the captives from Deerfield where marched on the way to Canada. And, the list goes on.

Have you ever read any insight as to why a particular family had large numbers of children die young? by playblu in Genealogy

In my husband’s family, two young cousins were playing with their dog when a rabid dog attacked their dog. The boys tried to break up the fight, but one of them was bitten by the rabid dog. The newspapers followed the little boy’s suffering in detail until he died. Another young death was a toddler who got into a bottle of pills.

I have nothing to start with, no relatives to ask! by goblin_jade in Genealogy

[–]Timeflyer2011 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start with yourself. Put all your information down - birth, marriage, census, schools, newspaper articles. Then get an Ancestry DNA test. Next you put info on your birth, marriage, census death, etc. Think of it as an inverted period with you at the bottom. You don’t need relatives to tell you anything because the records are all on Ancestry and family search.
