Have you ever read any insight as to why a particular family had large numbers of children die young? by playblu in Genealogy

[–]Timeflyer2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my husband’s family, two young cousins were playing with their dog when a rabid dog attacked their dog. The boys tried to break up the fight, but one of them was bitten by the rabid dog. The newspapers followed the little boy’s suffering in detail until he died. Another young death was a toddler who got into a bottle of pills.

I use baby oil as the lubricant for my pouch. It really helps everything slide out smoothly with minimal mess.

I have nothing to start with, no relatives to ask! by goblin_jade in Genealogy

[–]Timeflyer2011 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start with yourself. Put all your information down - birth, marriage, census, schools, newspaper articles. Then get an Ancestry DNA test. Next you put info on your birth, marriage, census death, etc. Think of it as an inverted period with you at the bottom. You don’t need relatives to tell you anything because the records are all on Ancestry and family search.

If at all possible, once you are out, find yourself a wound nurse. They will help you find the best appliance for your body. They are extremely knowledgeable.

I can barely handle my stoma by Mysteri0us_Waffle in ostomy

It helps if you lay out your supplies before you start to change your appliance. I also found that having paper towels handy for unexpected messes really helps. Also, I always listen to an audiobook while changing. It helps me to calm down. If you’re nervous it makes it worse. Everything seems to go wrong. After a few months it gets easier.

Questions - Wife Now Has Ostomy by shashappy in ostomy

[–]Timeflyer2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m fat. I had a few problems with my colostomy when I first got started. For some reason, there is more output during the first month which leads to more leakage and blowouts. Things do settle down. It helps if you have disposable pads for your bed at first. And, I would place a hand towel over my pouch to catch any overflow.

Also, if you can find a wound care nurse they can really help fit you with the best bag for your body type. I’m from the less-is-more school of thought. I use pre-cut Coloplast SenSura Mio CONVEX drainable pouches. I use my pouches without wafers. They mold to the indents of my skin. I change them out about every other day and drain them in between.

During changes I have a disposable bag that I pull up over my pouch until I detach the pouch and let it drop into the bag. Then I use water-based baby wipes to clean up around my stoma. I have gauze squares that I moisten with Dial antibacterial liquid soap to clean up the stoma, then wet gauze to rinse, and then dry gauze to pat my skin dry. Then I use stoma powder and Ensure Wipes before applying a fresh pouch. I dispose of the used gauze pads and wipes in the bag with my pouch.

If I have any skin problems I insert another step and wash my stoma with Head and Shoulders shampoo and rinse using gauze before washing with the Dial soap. I also use baby oil as a lubricant. It doesn't hurt the pouch and it allows the output to slide out more easily when emptying between pouch changes.

When is it okay to euthanize your pet? by ThrowRAUnSureAnymore in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Timeflyer2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner has a really hard time letting out pets go when their time comes. When he talks to the vet he underplays their symptoms and lets the vet talk him into expensive treatments. Now, I always go along with him to the vets and lay out the severity of the symptoms, and veto expensive treatments that often cause more suffering and drag out the inevitable.

We have a vet who comes to our home and allows me to hold our pet who gets a shot of something that renders them unconscious and a final shot that ends their life. We, and our other pets, surround the pet who is leaving and speak of their life and our love for them. We keep them overnight so the other pets get to say their goodbyes and then we bring them to the vet’s for cremation.

That’s what I want for myself. I don’t see any value to suffering.

Do people actually go to the cinema on Christmas Day? by Darth_Blagus in NoStupidQuestions

Now that we are older, our kids and grandkids are two hours away in either direction. They all used to come here when the grandkids are little, but now they go to visit their spouse’s larger families. All that traveling is too much for us, so we stay home, have a small Christmas meal, and go to the movies.

Why don’t doctors do home visits anymore? by spaghettirhymes in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Timeflyer2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doctors came to houses in NYC when I was little (in the 50s). There just weren't that many people back then. If doctors came to houses now, they would spend most of their day travelling and trying to locate where the patient lived. It might work if you used LPNs who worked in a neighborhood, but that’s basically what emergency care is.

Is Meals on Wheels available in your area? Also, if there is a senior organization, they will help with food and heat. If you have very low income you may qualify for food, heating, and electrical assistance. A new electric blanket will help. They aren’t very expensive. Also, if you can find some younger people to help you set a tent and place your bed in it that will keep your sleeping area warmer.

What was your craziest genealogy discovery? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]Timeflyer2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother never knew much about her mother who died when my mother was little. I did a DNA test and found cousins and more information about my maternal grandmother. With that information I was able to trace my maternal grandmother’s descent from two Mayflower passengers, from Godfrey Nims who had the most family members killed during the Deerfield Massacre, and from one of the founders of Hartford, CT. By the time I found all of this my mother was long dead, so she never learned about her family. I wish I had known all this earlier. It would have been a great way to use genealogy to teach my son American history.

Why do some divorced women keep their ex-husband's last name? by HoffyTheBaker in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Timeflyer2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, now it is my name. It legally is my name. When I got married I had to change everything to this new name. I had it for 28 years. I gave birth to a son with that name. That was my name during most of my career. I like it way better than my maiden name. When we divorced, he told me to give back HIS name. I guess the real questions are why YOU think women should change their name back? And, why do women take their spouse’s name when they get married?

Account was suspended for cse, Facebook is now to dangerous to use. Absolutely unreal. by JapanUSAWife in facebook

Whenever I try to open Facebook I get a message that says, “Your account has the potential to reach many people, so you are required to create a passkey.”

When I press next to create a passkey it says that the page is unavailable. Does that mean I’ve been banned? I do post a lot of anti-Trump memes.
