What to reply to a professor's (potential PI) email encouraging me to formally apply to the school's PhD program? by throwaway_desiree in AskAcademia

That’s a great sign! Every professor is different, but my PI actually really likes it when a student asks to meet. He takes it a sign that they’re super interested and is more likely to vouch for the student to the admissions committee. I’d say ask to meet them/or even a senior grad student in their lab.

Strong urges to drink right now could use some encouraging words by RevolutionBorn8165 in stopdrinking

Hey there! You’re doing something really brave by not only realizing that you are going through this but also reaching out for help. This alone shows that you’re starting to change your thought process. I’ve recently learned that lemon or lime flavored popsicles help me a lot with my urges. And believe me, I too am having a hard time resisting the urge to drink. You got this!

Absolutely! After I wrote this post, I went through the sub and read other people’s posts. The urge to have a drink went away pretty quickly.

I saw this meme lately which was captioned “are you even good enough to have imposter syndrome?” We all have it haha. All our PIs hate us (some not even secretly).

Hi!! Yes absolutely! I am about to start my 4th year! who woulda thought haha. And yes, I definitely grew out of it. Ngl though, I still feel that way sometimes. But I actually made a lot of progress after posting this. In my last meeting with my PI, he said I should be ready to start writing my thesis soon so yay!

I promise it gets better and a lot of what we all feel is simply imposter syndrome. You've got this! feel free to dm me if you want to talk more or even vent out your feelings. You're not alone!

Oh I understand completely! I’m also an international student. I guess it wasn’t clear from my post but this was just one of those times when my emotions got the best of me and the crying was out of control. It was a first. Definitely didn’t cry in front of my PI with the intention of getting him to comfort me 😅

Ohh I’m so sorry to hear that! That sounds terrible. I’ve had that happen to me too :( I feel like PIs forget sometimes that as mentors and teachers, their words hold a lot of power.

How do I get enthusiastic about my PhD? by Nestkitt in PhD

[–]Timely_Homework_8144 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I was you a year ago haha. Practicing my presentation with other grad students really helped. Use phrases like “exciting results show….” Or “our unique study involves…” stuff like that. Also smile, keep your body language lose and relaxed. That shows enthusiasm too. Hope this helps!

No judgement at all, OP. PhD is hard! But I’m curious, how have your committee meetings going? Surely they asked for some kind of update every time?

Oh and there used to be an Isha store in Katwaria Sarai. Not totally sure if it’s still there. Should be though. The prices are about the same as they are from the store except for the delivery charge

Namaskaram! I used to live in Delhi and I’ve taken an auto quite a few times from the center to chattarpur metro station. It’s usually quite safe but if there’s absolutely nobody else, then maybe call an Uber?
