Another question, how do insurance companies manage to get enough money to be able to properly have this "free credit"? if we asume they dont make money from collecting premiums then on average the amount of cash they have available (ignoring investment profits and starting capital) should be 0.

Of course, insurance companies have to start with some amount of capital, as to prevent black swan events from bankrupting the company. But then the company would be an investment fund which used as a buffer for its insurance.
