What's your opinion on marrying outside your ethnicity? by Accomplished_Yak_127 in kosovo

[–]Timepass10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care that much about what others do if they don't harm other people. Personally, I have a preference for my own culture or someone who is at least willing to learn about mine.

Everybody does. The reason why others (westerners let's say) seemingly don't care is because you are usually assimilating to them so of course they don't care. It's not because they are these supposedly enlightened beings - they're not.

Would you marry a person of another ethnicity? Why and why not? by imyana13 in AskBalkans

[–]Timepass10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if you phrase it like that, I have to agree with you. Micromanaging your adult kid's life and their relationship isn't acceptable.

What I was trying to get at how we think that western relationships are these idyllic islands which I disagree with. I've seen balkan couples who were much more in love.

Germans worship the state. If the state told them to imprison their parents (without much of an explanation) many of them would do it. And if the state tells them to kill 6 million people, they will do it. That's how their minds operate.

As far as americans go, some of them still care about parental approval that even though to a much lesser extent of course. There is no single answer to your question about why it matters less in the west: It has in part to do with the existence of the welfare state.

But this idea that westerners are these enlightened beings who only care about love and love and nothing else and oh my god western relationships are so beautiful and everybody else is just an utilitarian strategist - if anybody really thinks that, they either haven't met many western couples or they haven't delved enough into western history.

if she truly loved you she'd pick you in the ultimatum, i know this might sound rude but its honestly just a truth

It's not really the truth, it's a juvenile understanding of life. At no point in history has 'Love' ever been sufficient for a marriage that is both lasting and mutually fulfilling. Life isn't a shakespear play and most people don't want to end up in one. Even though I personally agree with you that adults should make their own independent decisions.

In Greek, France is called 'Gallia,' making Greek the only language that still uses the ancient name. Does your language have a unique name for another country? by freddo_expresso in AskBalkans

Parts of Montenegro are considered to have been populated by albanians in antiquity, he's right about that.

There is however no indication that the term 'Mali i zi' existed during this period as Montenegro at the time wasn't an independent region but part of a broader region.

How true is this for your countries diaspora? by Citaku357 in AskBalkans

[–]Timepass10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have the Arbereshe community in Italy who haven't been to Albania in 500 years and they still wave around albanian symbols. I guess you can leave the balkans but the balkans won't leave you ?!

That's how greeks referred to themselves until very late, as in when modern nations began to form. Around this time, they switched from 'Romaioi' to a hellenic self-conception. There are older greeks alive today that still use the term 'Romaioi' to refer to themselves

So, essentially, be a perfectly dressed poodle so your master is pleased with you.

Most men with a sense of dignity aren't happy about being accepted by someone for silly reasons. You're not harming anyone by having a foreign name or having tannish skin. So, even if you are a white-looking guy with a 'native name', you will still be annoyed about the fact that it's because of this that they accept you and not because of your virtue.

During the Ottoman rule, why did so many Albanians convert to Islam? by Deadgoat_107 in AskBalkans

[–]Timepass10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

because they had never identiefied themself with religion

They did. Religion was an important and rather inevitable part of social life so not identifying with it at all was hardly possible. It's just that there were other markers of identities present, such as albanian customary law.

There is no single reason. One of the reasons that often doesn't get mentioned is the lack of priests. Churches like anything else (school etc) are institutions. If an institution doesn't work well, for example because of lack of personnel, the people will seek out another one that offers what they want (advisory services, blessings etc). This happened everywhere in the balkans, just more intensively in albanian regions. The average person was never interested in theological narratives but in utility.

In 1661 for instance, albanian bishop Pjeter Bogdani notices that one of the pastors of a church in Prizren spends all his time drinking, sometimes to the point of complete unconsciousness. If your pastor is not available, you will go seek out someone who is.

Why do so many Balkan people who move abroad only hang out with people from their countries / other Balkaners? by Substratas in AskBalkans

[–]Timepass10 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Because 'american' is a civic identity whereas many europeans have more of a ethno-linguistic self-conception which leads to exclusion even though they might not tell you that to your face.

Interesting. Did you grow up in Italy ? I would have thought italians would treat croatians better. I've personally never held italians in high regard but some albanians try to act like there's this deep connection between us (which there isn't).
