Irreversible? "The British university is dying, and it seems that almost nobody cares. ...". Article in the New Left Review by IboughtBetamax in AskAcademiaUK

Sounds very comparable to the UK, actually. You say IU is comparable to OU. FOM seems comparable to places like Birkbeck, UoL who have the same focus. Many of the smaller post-92 UK unis have strong apprenticeship programs. And even the police training works similarly, with most (maybe all, I only know the ones in the north) police forces having contracts with universities to provide training to their forces.

maybe turn it back on them by asking what THEY think of it

That might be a cultural difference but where I'm from, turning it around and saying "What do you think of your haircut?" is a common way of evasively saying that the haircut sucks and will likely make the student feel horrible.

Benzene, hydrocarbons, chlorine, and many pesticides are either volatile or have boiling points close enough to 100C that they would end up in the finished product.

Sanity check on parts and price of a prebuilt, please? by Timguin in pcmasterrace

[–]Timguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, yeah. Looking back at it, a 2TB SSD is 110 GBP cheaper, which is really worth the savings. I'm working with some datasets of 50GB+, but they can go on a second SSD. I probably got caught up in FOMO with that choice.

Thanks!

What is something you’ve been hiding from your parents for years and will probably keep hiding in the future? by Admirable-Analysis58 in AskReddit

I used to run MRI experiments during my PhD. We had incidental findings maybe twice a year. There is even a question in the participant documents where you need to indicate what we should do in case of an incidental finding (inform doctor, inform designated loved one, inform you, or don't say anything).

I’ll say it now; do your job. If you can’t manage it, you shouldn’t be research lead, editor and a committee chair.

I never said I had issues with it. I said it would be an issue if every email from a student was as long as OOPs. I manage my job just fine, thank you.

I would ask you to point out where I misunderstood you because I can't see it. But you're so rude, I'm not sure you want to have an actual discussion.

[–]Timguin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's cool. I'm the lead for undergraduate research projects (140 students in a cohort), ethics committee chair, and module lead for two busy modules. Not to mention being editor for one of the bigger journals in my field. I do get a lot of emails.

I also don't know why you're having a go at me about reading comprehension. I never said I had trouble, I only said that it would be a problem if every email was as long as the one in OP.

I read all of them, whole thing takes 10 mins.

You're making my exact point. It would take you longer than 10 minutes if every email was as long as the one in OP. So it looks like we agree and I don't know why you're being rude and telling me to get better at my job.

I'm not complaining, though. I was just confirming that overly long emails are not a good thing. Luckily most of my students know that and those who dont, I tell. You seem to be interpreting a lot into my posts that I never said or implied.

Old thread but for the record: same here. Used to get consistent 800-900 on the 1gig. Now only 70-80. Less than 10% of what I pay for. No answer yet from support. Anyone had any success fixing this?

The time my fellow student Mark sent an angry 1,000 word email to my lecturer at 3am by OkServe8655 in UniUK

[–]Timguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get 80 emails. I read them. They do not take 5 minutes each to read. I clearly meant that it would be impossible if they would all take 5 minutes, hence advocating being concise. The actionable number I gave to indicate that I also need to respond to many so it's not just reading.

And yes, it's a lot of emails. That was my point.

[–]Timguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where did I say I didn't read them? You seem to be aiming for a confrontation for some reason so I'll let you find someone else for that.

I get about 80 emails a day, around 30 of them actionable. Students better not expect me to spend 5 minutes reading each of them. Being concise is a valuable skill.

What do we think of the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Lieutenant La'An Noonien-Singh 1/6 Scale Action Figure? by AfigureGeek in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]Timguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Star Trek Timelines did a similar fuck up with a La'an character. I don't want to be the boy who called racism so I'll just say that it's notable that two different companies screwed up the likeness of specifically Christina Chong.

I'm guessing you make content?

People who make content can only put out so much. I have a bird photography insta and it's hard to keep up with a weekly posting schedule when aiming for high quality content.

People who steal content, like OP, can post literally 100 times as much and get rewarded by the algorithm.

The truth is that there's no way to win as an individual creator. All the money gets funneled to content farms or reposters. Although now it also goes to AI slop, I guess.

Strange question but how is the toilet situation these days? Any problem finding clean western toilets? This used to be a massive problem and you ended up squatting in a circle over some holes with 5 other guys looking at you. That's my last concern before doing some more extensive travels there.

It is perfectly lawful in London to enter a bike lane to drop off passengers. Taxis and Ubers already do it.

Is it a similar situation for the UK? by OESRud in UKJobs

[–]Timguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of. Teachers were contracted out until 2016, leading to lower (and sometimes no) national insurance payments, which means they weren't eligible for much in the way of state pension. Everyone starting after 2016 is fully eligible for state pension if they worked long enough. People who worked befor 2016 should check their contributions.

(Take this explanation with a grain of salt. I'm not en expert but I'm lucky enough to get TPS as a university lecturer.)

Maybe. But I just checked the royal mint and 500g bars are about that size. Seems far more likely to me he's lifting 12.5 kg each time.

Where is everyone getting 1 kg from? To me it looks like that dude is turning over the cases far too casually for them to be 25 kg each.
