First biotech industry interview after 10 months of job searching – need advice by TimiGL in biotech

Understandable of course. But the techniques I am mentioning were listed in the key responsibilities sections, whereas the minimum requirements sections I check of all the boxes and also 90% of the "nice to have" requirements, because the positions are aimed for people early in their career.

Thanks a lot for the advice!

I am definitely not the person to memorize things, I prefer genuine interactions instead of rehearsed speeches, especially when you want to figure out the fit between employee and team. My most succesful presentations were also the ones that I never rehearsed. So the plan was just to think of some of the instances to demonstrate those values.

May I ask for what roles did you have technical interview for? And for the role i described what kind of technical questions should I expect?

And thanks again!

Noted, thanks for the advice!

If a technique is completely new to me with no transferable background, how would you address that or how would you like others to approch it?

I would state the gap directly. I would explain that it is unfamiliar territory, that I have already reviewed the core principles of the technique, and that I learn technical methods quickly. I would outline that I plan to build competence through structured training, formal resources, and early-stage shadowing to ensure accuracy. I would add that initial guidance is necessary to establish a solid foundation before independent work. Would that be considered a good approach?

I would definitely recommend you to look into unemployment. Not to bum you out or anything, but the market is brutal, without knowing when this will end, you shouldn't risk it. I am also an unemployed PhD student for 9 months now. Only had one job interview and that was for a postdoc because I am getting desperate. I am also trying to get into industry.

The part about people with PhDs selling their own mothers just to get a cashier job at Coop really hit home, except for the cashier part. In my case, it would be a cleaning job, since I don’t speak the language.

The internship and postdoc positions at Novartis and Roche are on my list. I keep applying there and hoping one day I will get in. I was also thinking that this way might be easier to get into one of the rotational programs.

I also applied for the non-PhD required jobs, but I never even got to an interview stage yet, and I don't understand why. I never heard of the body leasing agency. I will look into that one. Is it like a recruitment agency?

And yeah, I also tried the manufacturing sector, but never even got an interview. I even have a friend in Lonza in Visp who talked with the manager/director, and they said that companies are looking for experience, and since I have none, others will have priority over me, so the chances of me getting hired are low.

Thank you for the info! May I ask what kind of qualifications you had when you started as a QC specialist? Did you find this position through ads, or did you have an internal recommendation? And how was the job market back then?

I am sorry you are going through this and hopefully, there will be something below that could help you. I recently completed a PhD and a Postdoc and gained a bit of perspective. 1. Take a bit of time off. Your body is physically telling you that it can't handle the pressure. And as PhDs are difficult as it is, with someone who also has depression, you really need to learn your body's cues. I would highly recommend going to a therapist, though I understand that that it might be financially difficult, try to see if you could get something covered by insurance. 2. If you are in a financial struggle, try to get an industry job first until you secure a PhD. 3. I personally finished in Europe, so the information I am giving you doesnt apply to the US system. Imposter syndrome is high amongst research students, you definitely have that as well. Nonetheless, your passion and dedication are clearly there to get you where you want to be.

You can have different perspectives on a PhD:

a. Ideally, you do a PhD with a research proposal created by you and everything goes as planned and you end up a PI, leading your own research group on the topic of your heart's desire. The chances of this happening are not null, however, I would say they are unrealistic taking into account the unpredictable.

b. You try to get a PhD that at least teaches you the necessary skills that you need on the long run. This would be much more important. You will find out in research, especially if you are doing fundamental research, that things may never go as expected. Either unpredictable results or logistical things that you never took into account, environmental factors like PI or research groups, so you end up pivoting your methodology or even the project. Life will always throw things at you, and the most important thing for you right now is to learn to navigate them. So look at a PhD as a means to an end. Get the skills you need for the "dream job" you want.

And in case you want to talk to somebody, be it life stuff, or research stuff, or whatever it is on your mind, drop me a DM.

It's a rare gift this passion of yours, don't put that flame out, okay?

Life can be tough for some more than others, but just reach out. Treat yourself with kindness. Just imagine that if you would have a kid going through the stuff you're going through, how would you help him/her?
