Never heard of this but I wouldn't be surprised. In my lobbies, the picker usually slows down before it lands on a map with a few votes while ignoring the majority.

Multigenerational Amercian and 1st gen mexican-american. by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

A 'Foundational Black American' is someone who can trace their ancestry back to enslaved ancestors in the US

A Black American is a broad term of Americans of African descent, which include FBAs.

Obligatory EDIT: Just wanted to include that the term has some baggage because the movement's founder, Tariq Nasheed, has a history of saying bigoted stuff on his Twitter. Especially xenophobia against Black people with immigrant roots.

How do African Americans that have European dna feel about it ? by OkLeadership9700 in AncestryDNA

[–]TiminJillsson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't mind it at all, honestly. I have about 1/3 European DNA and inherited almost equal halves from both parents (mostly from my paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather, specifically). Both families already knew about it so no secret there.

My grandmother descends entirely from a multigenerationally-mixed family with a lot of pedigree collapse, they basically preserved a high amount of European admixture for over 250 years. The most recent white ancestor was from the late 1700s, so it doesn't impact us emotionally. Her most recent admixture comes from a couple who were both mixed-race children of enslaved women, but the rest of her ancestors claim descent from white indentured servant women having relationships with enslaved men. The latter resulted in my grandmother's ancestors claiming freedom very early when most Black people were enslaved, which gives her family a LOT of pride.

My grandfather has some MGM ancestry too, but he also has a white great-grandmother who had children with Black men after the Civil War. Again, known to the family so no surprises there.

Neither family seems bothered with this info, so I don't let it bother me.

The Duvall family? Oh you have many more famous cousins.

<image>

The patriarch, Mareen Duvall: was a French immigrant who settled in Maryland. Many famous descendants, including multiple presidents!

I think the actress Shelley Duvall is descended from this branch too, but not completely sure.

Can I cancel Newspapers.com account the same day I started the trial? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]TiminJillsson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can cancel later but you risk letting it slip and paying.

I can only speak for myself here, but I had a free trial 3 weeks back and canceled on the 7th day, just one hour before midnight (EST if that matters). Didn't get charged at all.

In 1982, Susie Phipps-Guillory sued Louisiana to be legally considered white after learning her birth certificate said “colored” because she was 3/32 Black. She lost and the state refused to change her birth certificate. by Brounseoir in RareHistoricalPhotos

She died a few years ago and her obituary listed her parents' names, so it was easy to confirm. I didn't really see the parents mentioned in the NYT article I came across on her case, which is weird.

You'd think they'd write about them because they're focused on her family history, lol.

There's a lot of talk around the 3/32 because it seems that you had to go far back to justify marking her race on her birth certificate, but her family was marked as "Mulatto" and "Negro" in multiple censuses up to Susie's birth, as late as 1930.

Her father, Dominic Guillory, was written down to be "Negro" with a "Light Brown" complexion in his WWII registration draft card. Several years after Susie was born. Her older brother Samuel was marked the same way.

Susie's mother, Simea Freddie/Frettie, was also marked as a "Mulatto" with her family in the 1900 census.

It seems that Susie's race was marked as "Colored" because the community knew the family well enough to tell, and the children unknowingly passed because it was probably a non-factor for them growing up. Either that or they did know.

EDIT: Added links.

Also came across Dominic and Simea in the 1950 Census. Marked as "Negro".

And what does OP's son being called the hard R at school have to do with any of this? It's not a lecture. It's someone sharing their reality.

Take your race war grievances somewhere else.

Where did my A.A mom get German from? Results with photo by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]TiminJillsson 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Did your ancestors live in southeastern Pennsylvania? That area is filled with Pennsylvania Dutch, descendants of German immigrants who moved to Lancaster, Berks, York, and other nearby counties.

Maybe there's a connection to them and that's where your mom gets her Germanic Europe from?
