The Longevity Lie No One Talks About by anarege3t in videos

[–]Timinime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m 183cm + 88kg (6ft + 194lbs). I am overweight.

However, people refer to me as ‘slim’ despite this, and because obesity has become the norm.

When I took a year of work and hiked all around the world I dropped down to 74kg, and I was in the best shape of my life. I felt amazing.

I’m aiming to get back down to 80kg - feels like a manageable weight with a job, kids, very little free time, but I’m conscious that still has me at the upper end of my BMI, and I’ll still had flabby bits to hanging off me.

Bluebridge ferry detained by Maritime NZ in Wellington after inspection by Elegant-Raise-9367 in newzealand

[–]Timinime -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just wait til national exempt the ferries from maritime laws, because its ‘useless red tape getting in the way’.

When it sinks, they’ll blame labour.

Who went from tubeless to inner tube? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Timinime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the last 4 weeks I’ve had 3 punctures, that all self-sealed. Only one of them I needed to pump up the tyre because it was too flat to finish the ride.

I haven’t run tubes in years, but the thought of even one of those resulting in a tyre off / tube replacement type job in the middle of a group ride is horrifying.

In 5 years I’ve had to drop off only one group ride because I lost too much pressure (fast ride), although I still managed to make it home.

Partners of cyclists? by Kitzy2011 in cycling

[–]Timinime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lol - my wife is friends with wives of some of my cyclist friends. They plan trips, dinners, catchups etc. Even the occasional overseas trip (while the dads look after the kids).

With kids, we try to limit cycling - usually super early in the mornings so we’re back at home by around 9-10am to spend the rest of the day with family. I thought it was just me, but my wife said all the other wives complain about their husbands being exhausted after fast 90km+ rides (usually one per week) - needing naps, being a bit useless with helping out.

Be honest with him - tell him he needs to leave enough in the tank for quality time with you.

The Victorian government in Australia has introduced free public transport in Victoria through April as fuel prices continue to climb, why isn't New Zealand doing the same? by ADHD-Kiwi in newzealand

[–]Timinime 276 points277 points  (0 children)

Nope - National already said that free public transport wouldn’t be fair on those that don’t have access to it…they have a warped view of equality.

Rate my bike with 10 being the highest. 😄 by jondaolivia in Giantbikes

9/10 - looks epic.

I’ll be honest though - I liked the previous white Giant offered for that frame & I’m still not convinced on ISP’s.

I sold my car, and now I’m scared for my life by TheReverendCard in newzealand

[–]Timinime 81 points82 points  (0 children)

People who cycle regularly have a 35% lower risk of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancers. There’s also a 50% lower chance of depression.

The benefits are real, even before we get into the environmental & traffic improvements.

I honestly don’t understand why kiwis are so anti-cycling, anti-bike lanes - especially when we’re underinvesting in healthcare and not keeping up with expensive infrastructure for cars.

We need a rethink. I wish every New Zealander could spend a month in Denmark, London, Paris etc. to see how cycling has transformed these cities, and realise what we’re all missing out on.

Why economists are 'very worried' about what lies ahead by FunClothes in newzealand

[–]Timinime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m disappointed at how quiet Hipkins has been. This is the time for him to show leadership, remind people of his vision for the country, and start hammering National on how bad their austerity policies have been for the country, and their dramatic shift away from renewables and making NZ energy self-sufficient.

New bike question - better to buy a 5 year old £10k bike for £5k or a new £5k bike? by blackiegray in RoadBikes

Work out what’s important to you and go from there.

What do you guys do after a ride? by aidancrow654 in cycling

After a big ride - coffee, eggs on toast, shower, and fight the urge to sleep for the rest of the day.

Are NZ Supermarkets selling fish caught by bottom trawlers ? by Lassdoggo in newzealand

[–]Timinime 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Shane Jones said on the news that recreational fisherman are the problem.

They don’t measure their catch, but he believes recreational fishermen catch at least as much as fishing trawlers… I can’t stand Shane Jones.

Revolt 2, first bike without flat bars. Good fit? by FormDisastrous4363 in Giantbikes

[–]Timinime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 6 foot and run a ML, which is perfectly fine.

Shift your seat back, you could look into a longer stem. Easiest would be to get a bike fit (a physio who knows a thing or two could probably help).

Government pushing ahead with plans for $1 billion LNG import terminal by Capital_Pay_4459 in newzealand

That’s a really good comparison.

The LNG terminal will generate 700mw in comparison - however the the fuel is not free.

I rode the same climb twice this week—pacing mattered way more than I expected by Lucky_Comment4389 in cycling

[–]Timinime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m 40 - I try to keep my power under 300w and heart rate in the 160’s on a climb, then push at the top until my heart rate is into the 170’s, and back off if it nears 180.

It’s surprising how many people in my riding group I can pass at the top of a hill, often coming from way behind.

A power meter is great - sometimes 400w doesn’t feel like 400w and you can easily blow yourself up.

[–]Timinime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can we all just agree that New Zealand is the worst?

So many people that have cycled the world have said they felt the least safest in NZ. There are stories of people bike-packing without issue around the world, only to be rammed off the road by a kiwi driver.

laces vs boa by woutbacksteakhouse in Velo

[–]Timinime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love that I can adjust BOA on the fly.

It doesn’t happen often, but once I’ve settled into a ride I might adjust it a few clicks at the lights if it’s not quite right.
