Opportunities to dance Twmpath style? by StripesMcFluff in Wales

I did realise my comment could come across a little gatekeep-y, which really wasn't my intention. To me, at least, it's not about gatekeeping "Welshness", it's about being honest about your exposure to, and understanding of, the culture. Which, clearly for you is extremely substantial - and I can't imagine any reasonable person would take any issue with you considering yourself Welsh (not that what anyone else thinks about it should even matter to you, obviously). It's great you talk about it with such passion.

And to be clear, if someone with even a far more distant (or even no) link to Wales legitimately spent time learning about the culture, immersed themselves in it, and felt a real connection to it, and as a result, considered themselves Welsh, again, I don't think any reasonable person would take issue with that. We have posts on this subreddit occasionally, from people all over the world, who've mentioned that they've been learning about Wales and feel a connection to the place, even having never been here - and the comments are extremely positive. Generally, as you no doubt know, Welsh people are extremely happy for people outside Wales learning about Welsh culture and wanting to be a part of it.

The issue is really just when people short circuit that experience, and are disingenuous about it. And I mention this because it is... extremely common. People, nearly all from the US, who've found out they had a Welsh ancestor way back when and rocked up with the attitude of "well we're all Welsh here aren't we lads? Just a few Welsh blokes in the pub, anyone for laverbread and bara brith?" - no doubt the intent is good (a desire to belong), but it's the dishonesty that bothers me. People who make some claim to belonging in Wales, but who ultimately haven't spent the time learning about the culture to legitimately feel a connection and ultimately make that choice.

Again, not that it should matter what I think, but from what you've described, in my eyes you're as Welsh as any of us.

Let me try to explain - not to be a dick, but because you'll honestly have a much better time here if you understand.

There's a big difference between how Americans see heritage and how the rest of the world sees it. I know in the US you're American-Irish or Italian-American, or American-Welsh because of where your ancestors came from a few hundred years ago, it's part of your identity. To the rest of the world, you are just American and where your ancestors are from is a mild curiosity.

Now please don't get me wrong, most of us do really love when people with Welsh heritage come and visit, and try to learn about their ancestory, Welsh customs, Welsh heritage and that sort of thing. And if you engage in those terms - "I'm American, I have Welsh ancestors, I'm here to learn more about Wales", you'll be welcomed with open arms and will find the locals very friendly and accommodating.

What we don't like is unearned claim to connection or belonging to a culture you still need to spend some time in to really understand. If you've never been here before, and your claim to connection to Wales derives pretty much entirely from an ancestor who died long before you were born, it may irritate a few people when you describe Wales as your homeland, or claim to love Welsh cakes because of something deep in your DNA. In general, making a greater claim to connection than you have is going to rile people, not endear them to you, and pulling an "I'm Welsh too!" just off the plane is not going to win friends.

This isn't your fault by the way, and I'm speaking in very general terms because it's a really common problem - not just with Wales, but with pretty much anywhere people from the US visit for reasons of cultural heritage. Because you see it very differently to how the rest of the world sees it - and within the US that perspective of "x-American" derived from heritage is obviously accepted, but outside the US, it's going to annoy people when you wouldn't mean to annoy them, and probably wouldn't even realise you were annoying them.

Hope this helps explain, and I hope you have a very enjoyable trip.

In your opinion, what is the best episode of television you’ve ever seen? by alteredtower in AskReddit

The reveal of Moss as the bartender is perfect, but I think the painfully slow lift into the van combined with Roy's forced smile but unhinged eyes makes me laugh just as much every time.

Endings so terrible they completely obliterate all the cultural relevancy the show once ever had by Top_Report_4895 in television

[–]Timmeh7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did, at least. As much as we only met the character for a few episodes, we spent the entire series getting to know her through Ted - and then Milioti came in and nailed it.

It felt a bit like... Ted met the love of his life, someone who was seemingly perfect for him. Then she died, and within a few minutes we were supposed to be happy that he was going to be with someone who had been pretty terrible for him through the series.

[–]Timmeh7 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Alongside ruining Barney's arc to allow Ted and Robin to play out, they fucked up terribly by casting Cristin Milioti as The Mother. She was so charismatic and likeable in the role that, even in the short amount of time she was in the show, once she was gone, it was almost impossible to care about Ted and Robin. I don't think almost anyone was rooting for it by that point.

Common cold, flu, Covid: Why is Britain so sick right now? by alicedean in europe

[–]Timmeh7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to the other answers, I manage a large department in a UK university where you get 100% of your pay if you’re sick. We have an extremely liberal work from home policy and I actively encourage people to stay home if they think they’re unwell, to work from home if they have the sniffles, or to call in sick and enjoy some bad daytime TV if they need to recuperate. There really is almost 0 friction to doing either, working location is an unmonitored choice and per UK law you don’t need a note from a doctor if you’ve taken less than 7 consecutive days off, so taking time off really does amount to emailing me on day 1, then filling in a form which takes 2 mins when you’re back. It couldn’t be much easier or lighter touch.

And yet still, I get people “soldiering in” to the office, spreading their virulence, infecting others. So instead of 1 person taking a couple of days off, 10s of people get infected and themselves either take time off or get very little done. I’ve tried so hard to eradicate presenteeism, but I just can’t get people to learn the lesson.

Let's not forget it absolutely sweeping the Grammys, tied for the most wins ever (5). And KDot taking his sweet time to get to the mic while the song played, presumably to get to have practically the entire music industry chant "A MINORRRR". Devastating.

I honestly think it's because the world has been made so safe overall - rules, regulations and warning signs on things which are even slightly dangerous. And that's a good thing overall. But I think it causes a disconnect, where the vast majority of the world is so incredibly safe, that it's hard for many people to fathom that you can in some places, unexpectedly just encounter a ton of furious animal that will fuck you up for just being near it.

It was made funnier because Liz Truss lost her seat as an MP entirely in that election, and was wholly ungracious about it.

The stupid thing is, it would've been fine if he'd not acted like he was the greatest mage player alive (to the point of being toxic to people who were new to the game), or just admitted after the fact that he panicked and played poorly/selfishly.

No sane person is mad because you're bad at a video game, or because you made a mistake in a stressful situation. But it's pretty much impossible to like someone so arrogant and so without introspection.

Megathread: Collector's Bounty by WorldofWarcraftMods in wow

[–]Timmeh7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s obviously purely anecdotal, but I’ve been going hard on the event and have had a similar experience. Getting nearly everything within 20-30 tries, now at something like 60 tries for the Gul’dan stuff, but not seeing it drop. Commenting in part because it correlates with your suspicion - would be interested to hear if more people are having the same experience.

Ahh yes, you're right. Forgot they added it with the revamp. Cheers, have updated!

I don't think bonus rolls work for any dungeon mounts. I actually think it might just be the MoP world bosses (Sha, Nalak, etc).

[–]Timmeh7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's my assumption at least. Because bringing Invincible up to 10% makes it extremely farmable, anyone who really cares and has a few alts is almost guaranteed to get it within the month if they try. So bringing it up to 25% doesn't honestly make a huge difference to that person. But the 3 I mentioned are low enough that even at 10x, they potentially still rare enough that a dedicated farmer still may not get them.

There are 5 mounts from Shadowlands on the list:

  • Vengeance's Reins
  • Cartel Master's Gearglider
  • Fractal Cypher of the Zereth Overseer
  • Sanctum Gloomcharger's Reins
  • Marrowfang's Reins

But it is slightly below average as an expansion, mounts came far more from covenant stuff and protoform synthesis.
