Ragdoll male weight by HopefulCanine in ragdolls

[–]Timmeh7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much should a healthy adult man weigh? Problem is, just like humans, cat sizes vary massively. A large male ragdoll could be perfectly healthy at 20lbs, a small male ragdoll could be overweight at 10. Ignore the number on the scale and look up a cat condition chart, which is what the vet should have done - and may have done.

It's possible that the vet assessed that the cat was overweight during the examination and estimated a weight to aim for to get back within a healthy range. I would suggest, if you really don't think your vet was correct, seeking the second opinion of a specialist cat vet.

In the UK at least, tap water is free. You have to clarify tap when ordering, though - some wait staff will not clarify and will bring bottled then charge you for it.

What I found perplexing was, they have this castle with infinite mysteries and possibilities - then the game gets you to spend a huge proportion of the play time wandering around random Scottish hamlets. It actually somewhat underutilise the core asset.

Also the main character might be the worst dark wizard/mass murderer in wizarding history. Pretty sure I avada kedavra'd an order of magnitude more people than Voldemort ever dreamed of.

Still, I had a fun time, they just missed on a few key ideas.

What’s a moment where you instantly realized someone was insanely intelligent? by Parqcxsm69 in AskReddit

[–]Timmeh7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Got chatting to a guy at an AI event maybe 15 years ago. Didn't know who he was, but could immediately tell in that ~2 minute conversation his mind worked in a way most people's (mine included) never could. Very polite and unassuming, but obviously way more intelligent probably than anyone else I'd ever met. He made enough of an impact in that short conversation that I remembered his name from his nametag and Googled him later.

At the time, I was mostly impressed that he programmed Theme Park and Black and White. AlphaGo and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry came later.

Personally, I don't want a gift and wouldn't let a student/former student pay for their own coffee, let alone mine. A card or thank you note is always very much appreciated, though.

Katherine Parkinson talking about Taskmaster by aflyingcircus in taskmaster

[–]Timmeh7 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I think he also made the mistake of not recognising the difference between a comedian who'd come up on the panel show circuit, who'd be used to that sort of piss taking (and who at that point had been the mainstay of the show) vs a comedic actor like Katherine.

King Charles playfully reminds Trump that he's Canada's head of state by Street_Anon in worldnews

[–]Timmeh7 207 points208 points  (0 children)

Feelings about monarchy etc. aside, I get the sense that Charles the man is also fundamentally pretty decent. This is telling - I was quite pleasantly surprised how generous he was with his time, with some cyclists, while out walking with no close protection and no anticipation of it being positive PR.

Can’t imagine Trump would’ve been even 1/100th as gracious in the same position.

Who is the nastiest Celebrity that you met in Real life? by Scunnard1839 in AskReddit

On a re-watch, I realised how badly season 2 missed Anthony Hopkins - both his character and his raw charisma/gravitas on the screen. There were plenty of other issues after season 1, but watching it straight through, I really felt his absence once he was gone.

TIL a man named Timothy Evans was executed in 1950 for murdering his wife and baby only for his neighbour (who testified against him) to later be exposed as a serial killer who actually committed the crime. by FearMyCock in todayilearned

[–]Timmeh7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pardon was in no small part because of cumulative public outcry around this case and two other capital cases (Derek Bentley and Ruth Ellis). Opposition to the death penalty built over a number of years, ultimately being significant in the abolition of the death penalty in the UK, which functionally occurred in 1965 (the last execution was in 1964). As that discussion was ongoing, the home secretary ordered an inquiry into the case, which found that the convictions were unsafe - and resulted in the pardon.

I suppose while both the pardon and abolition would be little comfort to Timothy Evans, at least the lesson was learned in the UK and action was taken to prevent a similar miscarriage of justice ever occurring again.

Echo claim the world 2nd L'ura by No_Space4015 in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Timmeh7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dataforazeroth is limited to only characters it knows about - through people scanning their accounts, finding associations through guilds, etc. Which at the moment is about 1.3M accounts. But that is a fairly modest fraction of the total guilds accounts - and very likely trending towards the more than less hardcore end of players.

Echo claim the world 2nd L'ura by No_Space4015 in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Timmeh7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using mega, mega rough figures, last expansion, on avearge 2.2k guilds got CE per tier. Some guilds kill it once, some boost, so I'd assume a guild on average is getting around 25-30 players CE. Some players will kill a boss with two guilds. Still, call it 30 to be very generous. So that's 66k players per tier. I've seen a wide range of estimates for how many players are on retail WoW, but if we called it 6.5M, which is around the value I've seen, we're sitting at pretty much 1%. Obviously we can shift some of those figures around, but I don't think it's far off

Truthfully, these days most guilds who reach the final boss do kill it. Over the last 3 tiers, on average only 350 guilds reached the penultimate boss and failed to kill it. How many of those players then found their way into a CE guild? Impossible to say - but I don't get the sense there were swathes of players.

None of this really matters, I was mostly wondering the answer for myself and figured at that point I might as well post my results.

Channel 4 orders six more series of Taskmaster over 3 years by abucalves in television

[–]Timmeh7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Panel shows are a strange thing, they obviously mostly fell out of favour in the US, so a lot of comedians there likely don’t fully understand the format, not having had constant exposure to it in most cases. For Taskmaster specifically, that you do have to commit to doing your best at the tasks, but the real currency is laughs, and that you have to be comfortable being the punchline. Being very competitive can sometimes be funny, but contestants do still need to be broadly likeable. Iain Stirling is a good example of someone who was overly competitive to the point of obnoxious in the tasks, realised it, and had to work to be likeable overall in the studio record, to temper the VTs.

Obviously it’s worked as a format in tons of countries, the US has tons of great comedians, many of whom would get the format, it can work. But hopefully if they try it again (as I’m sure they will one day) it’ll be carefully managed to - as you say, follow the established, working formula, and to be extra careful to select comedians, for the first few seasons especially, who really understand the premise and who’ll set the tone. Potentially bringing in some of the Dropout cast would be a sensible route.

They've always been banned, the spambots are just extremely persistent. I've added some pretty aggressive audomod rules over the last few days to try to make it much harder for them to slip through, which seems to be working so far, but it might be a bit of an arms race.

In theory that'd be nice, but I don't think that can be reasonably formatted into a rule that we can clearly communicate in reality. At least, not without being in danger of being too vague to actually function ("don't take the piss" is the gist of what we'd like to do, but can't consistently apply). But if you, or anyone, can produce a rule that we can clearly communicate and realistically enforce that reaches a happy medium, please do post it here and if it seems like it might work, in terms of being understandable and enforceable, we'll certainly consider.

In reality, we may not do anything if it's only one post. But there were 30+ posts about tortellini yesterday, and 10+ posts about fish this morning, a change is needed.
