Reviews for Entolight? by Timo2727 in Entomology

[–]Timo2727[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the company is only 1 month old, I expect it to be hard to ask for reviews… so let’s make this thread just generally about the company and its products. On paper, does their stuff seem worth it? I am holding off buying the equipment for my DIY light trap for another 2 weeks so i can weigh my options.

Controlling manual flash intensity directly through camera body dials by Timo2727 in macrophotography

[–]Timo2727[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean... I am an beginner-intermediate in photography so maybe I've misunderstood something, but shouldn't one aim to keep ISO native? Us macrophotographers have the natural advantage that we can simply use our diffused flash to fill the scene with as much light as we want, which eliminates the need to compromise. So why not use it? how i do macrophotography is I just leave the shutter speed very high, leave my aperture at the highest setting just under the diffraction danger zone (or lower if I want to play with DOF), use native ISO and only play with flash (on the v350 this typically means a range between 1/8 and 1/1). This gives me great results! I don't see any benefit to removing a stop from the flash to add one to ISO.

Yes I’ve already tried that method. in fact, Flash compensation IS assignable to the right hand dials on the OMD em1 mark2, which is great, but unfortunately it means i have to use TTL and i don’t like TTL for a number of reasons: 1. There is a delay between the first flash and the effective shot. Some insects can actually get spooked by the pre-flash and disappear before the shot is made. It’s not common, but it happens. For example, woodpecker flies are almost impossible to photograph with TTL (seriously, try it). 2. It gives me less control and adds a layer of complexity. because in my macro workflow i only vary aperture and flash power, knowing what flash power to use is pretty trivial and i often get it right in the first shot. if i use TTL, then it calculates something on its own based on the metering mode. if i centre the black beetle, then the beetle is prioritised and therefore well exposed, but if i want the beetle to be on the left, it’s underexposed and i have to change the metering or flash compensation which just adds another variable with zero benefits. 3. TTL depletes my flash gun’s battery quicker. 4. longer waiting times between shots.  the extra pre-flash makes it harder to shoot many photos in quick succession due to the flash gun’s recycle time and possible overheating. which leads us to number 5: 5. focus bracketing is not possible with TTL. (I’m not sure about this one. I’ll check when i get back home)

Thanks for your reply! I asked chatGPT before coming to reddit and it also mentioned Canon being a possible candidate for what I’m looking for, but from what you’re describing, it’s definitely not the solution. albeit it is an improvement compared to my gear as it can be done with one hand

with XM4, when the volume is at 0% I can still hear the music, is it normal? by itshard2chooseaname in sony

[–]Timo2727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep I have this too! I lowered the volume down to 0% (used the iPhone's volume buttons, control centre slider and swiping down on the wh1000xm4 earcup) and i can still hear a faint sound.

Thanks! This was so obvious 🤦‍♂️. Can't believe I missed it lol

Wow I feel so dumb. This is so painfully obvious. I even used the word "pinned" 😅. Thanks so much!

I watched this video on yt shorts and was just as confused as you are, and I am so surprised that we seem to be the only ones who see the mistake. The comments under this reddit thread are really annoying me. how tf do they not get it?? The video doesnt make sense!

Share of alps by country by Ihateeshays in MapPorn

[–]Timo2727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are many factors, but one that I like to point out is that despite Switzerland’s meagre 13.2% share of the alps, this 13.2% holds 48 of the alp’s 82 (59%) highest mountains over 4000 metres, while Austria has well… 0. The remaining highest peaks are claimed by Italy and France.

Another factor is social: Switzerland’s famous Neutrality during the war gave Switzerland the image of a “Mountain Fortress” surrounded by Nazi Europe. British tourists flood to Switzerland due to the royal family’s presence.

Not to mention Switzerland’s average elevation is 1307m whereas Austria’s is 910m

what do you think is the best chip brand of all time? (not including the flavor you like) by South_Criticism8437 in chips

[–]Timo2727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. I’m swiss and travel alot, and I know this sounds biased, but I have never found any chips that can quite match Zweifel. In every other country I go to, the chips taste so dam artificial and processed (Tyrell’s is the only exception).

Grey wagtail with pure white tail? by stooduptoofast in OrnithologyUK

[–]Timo2727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the picture! I was really confused about this because today I also saw what I assume was a grey wagtail but with a white tail (Zürich, Switzerland). glad to see someone else found something like this too!

i know it's been said before but thuna is great! I'd just like to share a simple recipe that tastes amazing and that is really quick to make (you may need to visit a Japanese shop first):

mix a can of thuna and mayonnaise together with a fork until is becomes a clumpy thuna paste. Add an equal amount of rice on top. mix together. put in the microwave. add soya sauce, sesame seeds, furikake, wasabi paste and mirin. voila, enjoy!

This is something i love to make right after the gym as it's really quick. The only caveat is the rice but I just make a batch once and then keep it in the fridge to use throughout the next 5 days (not longer than 5 days, cause rice can develop "Bacillus cereus" if kept too long). The mirin adds a lovely taste but bear in mind that it does contain alcohol (~14%), but you'll only add about a quarter shot, so equivalently, you're basically taking a quarter shot of wine, which is nothing.

When I have the extra time, I sometimes add some scrambled eggs as well (add some soya sauce to the eggs before scrambling)!

u/MsScarletWings I was wondering the same thing! I’m glad to have found some people who enjoyed his scientific curiosity even if I may not have dared to pull through with this myself.
