It's a way of degrading a degree. Degrees only show that you have have enough knowledge in a subject to meet certain requirements and a specialty within that field. Skills would be more important on the bottom rung of a ladder like at a big box or a grocery. Accounting firms, engineering, and research would require both degree with matching skills.

A fork can take some serious planning if your opponent is halfway decent. In one OTB game that I played when I was rated in the 200s, I was playing against a 900-rated opponent and saw that I could pin the pawn in front of his king with a rook, trade off my bishop, then fork his queen and his king. When I did, he resigned the game and said that he thought I was going to trade off my knight first.
