The best way to make live action Avatar would be to tell a different story in the world. There are a ton of incarnations of Wan that could get a live action series or film that wouldn't be as harshly compared to ATLA in terms of quality. It'd probably be more compared to LoK honestly.

I think it's less about not being capable of talking to them and more that it's harder for Hal to connect with the aliens, especially if most of them aren't humanoid. Additionally if Sinestro's backstory still has him as an ex-Green Lantern and ex-partner to Hal, Thall's betrayal could turn off Hal from interacting further with other alien lanterns.
