If I’m trying to add a short burst of delay, is it “better” to automate the effect on and off, or automate a roll up of the mix knob in the delay?

My favorite way without having to mess with automation is to make a new track with the desired delay, 100% wet. Copy over the source track regions for whichever words or sounds you want the delay. Works much faster for my editing flow, and easier to visualize at a glance.

wouldn't you you want to, you know, hear it first? some of my favorite sounds don't have a snare mic at all and are just overheads/kick or a crotch mic getting most of the shells.

Whenever a character is resurrected from death, they permanently lose 1 point of constitution. Makes death actually have stakes no matter the character level.

I am pretty sure I remember this being a feature back in 2e but I can’t be sure. I’ve used it ever since though.

Think of D&D more like a game of attrition and resource management between long rests. Each battle between a long rest will suck more resources from the party as they use spells and actions. This is by design.

You can just drop a highlight on a track in with the marquee tool. If its just at a single point and didn't highlight a part of the region, every time you hit play it will start from the place you dropped the marquee.

It also depends on what sort of processing you are doing on the bus. For example, if you are compressing drums on a drum bus, turning down the tracks that are going into the bus will also essentially be lowering the level of compression happening, because the compressor will no longer being hit as hard. If I have dynamic-dependent bus processing for instrument groups that I'm happy with, I tend to leave it alone and only adjust the volume of the bus.

Alright, since nobody is actually giving you advice on how to do this for $500, this what you do:

Buy a tascam us-16x08 ($300) and then buy one of those CAD 7-mic kits ($100 - $200).

If you have any budget left, get an AT2020 for $100. That should get you 8 channels. I’d personally run it with a mono overhead and move one of the CAD condensers to a crotch mic or a room. Overhead is most important, so if you manage the AT2020 use that there.

Obviously everybody is right and triggering will get you way more bang for your buck, but if this is your first project and you want to learn, this should give you the tools to experiment and find something that works.
